GSW Scholarships

Scholarships are awards based on academic excellence, merit, talent, and other possible criteria.

The scholarship deadline for GSW applications is February 15

Georgia Southwestern State University New and Returning Student Scholarships

The following scholarship programs are funded through the generosity of our alumni, parents, former faculty members, and friends of the University. To apply for these scholarships, the student must complete the Beginning Freshmen Scholarship or the Associate Degree Graduates Transfer Scholarship, or Wheatley Continuing Scholarship application. These applications can be obtained either on line or by calling the Admissions Office at 1-800-338-0082:

    Wheatley Honors Program

$2,500 per academic year and renewable if the college GPA is 3.2 or higher. Minimum SAT of 1150 combined score on the Critical Reading and Math sections only or ACT composite score of 27; College Preparatory Curriculum GPA of 3.0. Selected for recommendation to the President by the Scholarship and Financial Aid Committee; application deadline, February 15th. Students selected are required to reside on campus.     Wheatley Academic

$2,000 per academic year and renewable if the college GPA is 3.0 or higher. Minimum SAT of 1100 combined score on the Critical Reading and Math sections only or ACT composite score of 24; College Preparatory Curriculum GPA of 3.0. Students selected by the Scholarship and Financial Aid Committee; application deadline, February 15th. Students selected are required to reside on campus.


    Wheatley Leadership

$1,500 per academic year and renewable if the college GPA is 3.0 or higher. Minimum SAT of 1000 combined score on the Critical Reading and Math sections only or ACT composite score of 22; College Preparatory Curriculum GPA of 3.0. Students selected by the Financial Aid and Scholarship Committee; application deadline, February 15th. Students selected are required to reside on campus.


    Wheatley Special Talent

Variable amounts per academic year. Variable criteria depending on skills; auditions may be required; final decision made by the department chairs. Contact Fine Arts or Athletic Department for appropriate methods of application and deadlines.


    Wheatley Associate Degree

$500-1000 per academic year. Completion of Associate Degree, recommendation from previous school; previous college GPA reviewed; final decision made by Scholarship and Financial Aid Committee. Application deadline is March 15th.


    Wheatley Continuing Scholarship

$500 per academic year. Nomination is required for each year. Other criteria: application only by nomination of a GSW faculty member; completion of 15 or more academic credit hours with 30 hours to be completed by second semester of enrollment at GSW; minimum GPA is 3.0 or higher. Nominated student may not be the recipient of another GSW campus scholarship.


    John and Betty Pope Fellowships

The John and Betty Pope Fellowship in Caregiving is a unique program of the Rosalynn Carter Institute for Caregiving at Georgia Southwestern State University. The fellowship provides financial support for outstanding individuals pursuing training and careers in fields related to caregiving. To learn more about the fellowship, click here.

School of Arts & Sciences

Available scholarships offered through the Department of Chemistry at Georgia Southwestern State University


   The Vivian Schild Scholarship
     Criteria

i. Completed application

ii. Female chemistry major

iii. Minimum of 12 semester hours of chemistry courses that apply toward major completed at GSW

iv. Minimum cumulative GPA of 2.7

v. Based upon highest sum: Overall GPA + Science and math GPA + Chemistry GPA


     Selection Process

The Department of Chemistry will review applications once per year prior to the Fall Semester.

Awarded by the Wesley Foundation Board


     Monetary Amount

$1000 per year awarded once in the Fall Semester based on availability of funds


   Chemistry Club Scholarship
     Criteria

i. Completed application

ii. Chemistry major

iii. Minimum of 48 semester hours

iv. Minimum of 12 semester hours of chemistry at or above 2000 level

v. Minimum cumulative GPA of 2.7 and chemistry GPA of 3.0

vi. Active chemistry club membership (attendance at majority of chemistry sponsored meetings and events)


     Selection Process

i. Candidates will be selected upon: 1. Fulfillment of the above criteria 2. Overall GPA 3. Science and math GPA 4. Chemistry GPA

ii. In the event of a tie, the cumulative GPA will be added to the chemistry GPA. If there is still a tie, the award will be equally divided.

iii. This scholarship is to be awarded to an undergraduate student attending Georgia Southwestern State University for application toward payment of tuition at GSW. The scholarship is awarded during the FALL semester and will be awarded only once per student.


     Monetary Amount

$200 based on availability of funds


    The L.R. Towson Scholarships

Junior Award

     Criteria

i. Completed application

ii. Chemistry major

iii. Classified as a junior by 1st semester of the award with a cumulative GPA of 2.5.

iv. Completed 12 semester hours of chemistry above the 1000 level with a GPA of 2.5.

v. 2 letters of recommendation by faculty members, one from outside the Department.


     Selection Process

The granting of the awards will be determined by the faculty of the Department of Chemistry during the Summer Semester prior to the awards granted annually in the Fall Semester. In the event of 2 or more candidates having equal qualifications, student's need will determine the award.


     Monetary Amount

The award is for $125 per semester for each of the Fall and Spring Semesters based on availability of funds. Failure to maintain minimum criteria results in discontinuation of the award.


   Senior Award
     Criteria

i. Completed application

ii. Chemistry major

iii. Classified as a senior by 1st semester of the award with a cumulative GPA of 2.5.

iv. Completed 18 semester hours of chemistry above the 1000 level with a GPA of 2.5.

v. 2 letters of recommendation by faculty members, one from outside the Department.


     Selection Process

The granting of the awards will be determined by the faculty of the Department of Chemistry during the Summer Semester prior to the awards granted annually in the Fall Semester. In the event of 2 or more candidates having equal qualifications, student need will determine the award.


     Monetary Amount

The award is for $400 per semester for each of the Fall and Spring Semesters based on availability of funds. Failure to maintain minimum criteria results in discontinuation of the award.

These are the current guidelines for scholarships offered through the Department of Chemistry to which the Department will adhere in the distribution of the awards.


    Agerton and Argo Scholarships

They are chosen by faculty nomination and only students who are at least juniors and who have a GPA above 3.0 are considered.


    Wheatley Music Scholarship

It is open to all students enrolled in the Concert Choir or University Band, primarily music majors and minors. An audition is required. Please contact music faculty for audition requirements.
