ELI Academic Registration
Placement Testing
During orientation, students are given tests in order to place them in the appropriate level. Currently the ELI is using the Compass ESL tests for reading and grammar placement, a writing assessment for writing placement, and an oral interview for pronunciation placement. Each student is placed in classes based on placement test scores.
Scores
Class grades are given at midterm and at the end of each semester. The student can access these grades through the GSW RAIN system online.
These grades are usually an average of the following:
1. Attendance
2. Exams and other graded material
3. Participation
4. Homework
5. Final Exam
Promotion:
The student should have both (1) a grade of C (70%) or higher and (2) the
required exit exam scores.
Section Changes
The coordinator handles section changes at the beginning of a course, usually the first 2-3 days of class.
Section changes can be made for the following reasons only:
1- If a student feels
that he has been placed in the wrong level, he should meet with
the Coordinator of Instruction. The Coordinator of Instruction will then
consult with the student's current instructor(s). A misplaced student will
be moved only on the
recommendation of the student's current instructors. Instructors who feel
they have a misplaced student should also see the Coordinator of
Instruction.
2- Students with
physical handicaps that make going from class to class difficult
or impossible may have a section change or have a special schedule arranged.
