PLACEMENT TESTING
SCORES
SECTION CHANGES AT THE BEGINNING OF A COURSE
During orientation, students will be given tests in order to place them in the appropriate level. Currently the ELI is using the English Placement Test (MPT) by the Testing and Certification Division of the English Language Institute of the University of Michigan.
Each student will be placed in classes based on placement test scores.
Class Grades:
Class grades, or scores for each class will be printed on a grade report at the
end of each semester and Summer term. The student will get a copy. These grades will be an average of
the following:
1. Classroom Attendance
2. Class Exams and other graded material
3. Classroom participation
4. Class homework
Promotion:
The student should have both (1) a 70% or higher-class grade and (2) the required exit exam scores
SECTION CHANGES AT THE BEGINNING OF A COURSE
The coordinator handles section changes at the beginning of a course. Section changes are made for the following reasons only:
1- if a student feels that he has been placed in the wrong level, he should
see the Coordinator of Instruction. The Coordinator of Instruction will
then consult all of the student's current teachers. A misplaced student
will be moved only on the
recommendation of the student's current teachers. Teachers who feel they have a
misplaced student should also see the Coordinator of Instruction.
2- Students with physical handicaps that make going from class to class difficult or impossible may have a section change or have a special schedule arranged.
