PROGRAMS

I. Cross-Cultural Understanding

Outreach to the Campus:

  • Association, academic advising
  • Supporting organizations and activities Sponsoring exhibitions. lectures. and confer­ences for cross cultural awareness

Outreach to the Community:

  • Providing language and cultural Information and support for local schools, industries, and organizations
  • Sponsoring lectures, exhibitions and confer­ences for cross cultural awareness

II. Exchanges With Asian Institutions

  • Sister School and Sister City Relationships
  • Faculty and student Exchange and Profes­sional Enrichment Programs
  • Study Abroad Assistance

III. Asian Language and Culture

Japanese Language Teacher Training Program (JLTTP)

Japanese graduate students, selected for their academic ability, English proficiency, and de­sire to teach, are trained and placed in a three-part program:

  • Orientation to American Culture and Graduate School
  • Japanese Language Pedagogy, developed by Dr. Seiichi Makino, Professor of Lin­guistics and Japanese Language at Princeton, and taught by Japanese language specialists under Dr. Makino's supervision.
  • Placement in universities in Georgia and many other states to study their chosen ma­jors with a stipend for teaching Japanese Language

Japanese Language Pedagogy and Internship Program

The JLTTP program w as expanded to promote Japanese Language education in elementary and secondary schools. Japanese volunteers partici­pate in the same pedagogy course and then are placed in schools for 1 year as Japanese lan­guage teachers. The school system provides room and board for the teacher.

IV. English Language Instruction

The English Language Institute

The Center's English Language Institute (ELI) brings students with varying goals from numer­ous countries to study English as a second lan­guage and American culture in a traditional colle­giate setting. Students can live in dormitories and become a part of the campus community, with opportunities to interact with American families.

Four ESL Programs

  • Intensive English Program - Students are placed in level by proficiency. Each level has four classes a day: grammar, listening speaking. reading. and writing. Classes pro­mote understanding American culture. aca­demic success. and preparation for TOEFL.
  • American Language and Culture - Short Term Groups of 12 or more attend custom designed classes and activities focusing on language and Culture.
  • English for Specific Purposes-Groups of 12 or more can study English for Nursing. Business, Computer Science or other fields for professional enrichment
  • Intensive Workshop for ESL Teachers - Groups of 12 or more can study Teaching English as a Second Language (TESL) in an 8-week certificate program.
