ABOUT THE PROJECT Books are the bees which carry the quickening pollen from one to another mind. (James Russell Lowell) It was books that taught me that the things that tormented me most were the very things that connected me with all the people who were alive, or who had ever been alive. (James Baldwin) As part of Georgia Southwestern State University’s (GSW) commitment to academic excellence, the Community of Learning Program encourages interdisciplinary study by examining a particular work by a selected author. Prior to each semester, a committee composed of faculty from each of GSW's schools recommends a book to the campus community as a focus for study and discussion by faculty, staff, and students. In most cases, the author of the selected book is also invited to visit campus and join the conversation. Although not every selection is obviously applicable to all academic disciplines on campus, selections are made with eye toward finding creative ways that each department and school can involve their students in Community of Learning activities. So pick up this semester’s selection, read it, and join the conversation.
