New Student Survival Tips

Adapting to college presents many challenges and new experiences.  High school graduates may be surprised to find that their old study habits may not work as well in their new environment.  Here are some helpful hints for incoming students proven to help them get off to a good start:

  • Manage your time effectively.  Schedule two hours of study for every one-hour in class.

  • Learn to use the library effectively.  Ask the librarian to show you how to use the computer to locate materials.

  • Keep up with assignments.  Obtain course syllabus and refer to it often.

  • When reading or listening, identify the main ideas and supporting details.

  • Do not try to write everything down.  Review reading and lecture notes within 24 hours, and again from time to time.

  • Find a place to work that is well lit, free from distractions, and near the resources you may need when studying.

  • If you do not understand certain material, ask your professor or seek tutoring.

  • Leave adequate time to prepare for exams.  Don't wait until the last minute to start studying.  Attend all review sessions for an exam.

  • Take care of yourself physically.  Eat properly, get enough sleep, exercise, and find time to relax.  If you encounter a problem, don't ignore it and hope it will go away.  Consult a counselor.

  • Stay in touch with your loved ones.
