Georgia Southwestern solidifies record enrollment

Making good on an earlier
report, Georgia Southwestern in Americus has officially set a new record
enrollment with 2,717 students. The news became evident when the University
System of Georgia released its fall 2008 enrollment reports today. With an
increase of 13 percent from fall 2007 to fall 2008, GSW boasts the second
highest rate of growth among 13 state universities and is one of two
institutions in that category with a double-digit increase. More

GSW begins making way for new residence hall
|
|
Construction workers began demolition of
Complex III on Tuesday, Oct. 14. The Georgia Southwestern residence hall was constructed at a cost of $1.1 million in 1970. The
new suite-style, 300-bed, upperclassmen residence hall (name to be determined)
going up in its place will cost an estimated $14 million to complete with
payment coming through a bond issue. As part of Georgia Southwestern’s
sustainability initiative, brick, block and concrete rubble from the demolition
will be used as filler for the new construction site.

It was a historic day yesterday in the life of Georgia Southwestern State University. In front of a crowd of friends and family approaching 300, the institution was privileged to name its newly acquired golf course at a ceremony after Griffin B. Bell, a former U.S. Attorney General, federal judge, GSW alumnus, and one of the 20th century’s most influential political figures. The new official name of the facility is known as the Griffin Bell Golf Links and Conference Center.More

Today, in the second and final day of its August 2008 board meetings, the Board of Regents (BOR) of the University System of Georgia approved a number of requests from Georgia Southwestern State University (GSW) President Kendall A. Blanchard, Ph.D.
In particular, the BOR authorized the naming of the Georgia Southwestern Golf Links in Americus and Conference Center the “Griffin Bell Golf Links and Conference Center” in recognition of former U.S. Attorney General, GSW graduate and Americus native Judge Griffin Bell.

The enrollment at Georgia Southwestern State University is on pace to reach a record high. As of the end of the day on Friday, August 15, 2804 students had enrolled. This is 399 or approximately 16 percent more students than were enrolled on the day of the final count in the Fall of 2007.

Move-In Day 2008 was a busy one Sunday, August 10 as the residence halls at Georgia Southwestern welcomed a capacity and new record 804 students. This number is an improvement of more than 50 occupants from fall 2007 when Georgia Southwestern housed a then record 751 students.

Wicker family initiates GSW scholarship
|
|
George Stanly Wicker, Sr. was the type of alumnus any university would love to have associated with its heritage. Fortunately, Georgia Southwestern State University (GSW) claims him as one of its own. Wicker passed away in 2007, but his memory will live on at GSW.
At a May 31 reception hosted by GSW President Kendall and Connie Blanchard, Wicker’s wife, Margaret, and four children, George, Wesley, Sarah and Ruth donated the first installment of a scholarship to be endowed in his name.

The Pollution Prevention Assistance Division (P²AD) of the Georgia Department of Natural Resources recognized Georgia Southwestern State University as an environmental leader at a ceremony earlier today. Regents Authorize South Georgia College Entry Program on campus of GSW

At its March 2008 Board meeting the Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia approved the request of President Blanchard of Georgia Southwestern and Interim President Virginia Carson of South Georgia College in Douglas to establish the South Georgia College Entry Program. The program will be housed on the GSW campus in Americus and administered by South Georgia College.
