The James Earl
Carter Library is named in honor of the father of former President
Jimmy Carter. James Earl Carter (1894-1953) was a
Sumter County farmer and business man, civic leader,
strong supporter of education, and representative from
Sumter County to the General Assembly of Georgia. The Library contains 190,000 volumes
and seats over 600 people. The first floor houses
Circulation and Reserves, Reference Collection, Government Documents, Rare Books Room, ERIC
Collection, Newspaper Collection, and Art Gallery. The
computer lab and public computers provide access to
GALILEO (Georgia Library Learning Online) databases and
the Internet. Along with
Periodicals, the Main Book Collection, The Harold Isaacs
Third World Collection and the Audio Visual Collection,
study areas for individual or group study are found on the
second floor. The Carter Display is also located on
the second floor. It contains several rarely seen
photographs of the younger Jimmy Carter and a collection
of materials from the Carter campaigns.
Georgia Southwestern State University is a charter member
of SOLINET (Southeastern Library Network), which was
established March 9, 1973 to increase the availability of
bibliographic resources of ten Southern states through the
use of electronic data processing and telecommunications.
Presently, the James Earl Carter fully utilizes the
network's on-line shared cataloging
system and its interlibrary loan subsystem. More
than 30 million books and other library items are
available through the network.
The James Earl Carter Library has been a selective federal
depository for United States Government Publications since
1966, providing a valuable resource to both the University
and the general public. |
