Library Newsletter Fall 2006
In This Issue:
From The
Dean's Desk
The Library began the Fall
semester with the proverbial "bang". We began Faculty
Planning Week with a Library Open House for new and
returning faculty and staff. Refreshments were served
and information and short demonstrations of GALILEO
provided. Faculty had the opportunity to meet their
Library selector/liaisons and to validate their IDs.
September was marked by
the grand opening of the GSW Historical Collection
housed in the newly renovated Macy Bishop Gray Rare
Books Room. It should be noted that while this opening
marked the completion of our second Centennial project,
we hope that the historical collection will continue to
evolve with further submissions of materials by members
of the GSW community. And, again, permit me to thank all
of you who have contributed to this fine collection and,
in general, to all for your continuing support of the
Library.
The Library is blessed
with a creative staff. One of their ideas, a series of
brown-bag Luncheon Programs for GSW and the community,
came to fruition on Sept. 26th and Sept. 29th with two
programs celebrating Banned Books Week. These programs
featured readings from their favorite banned books by
faculty, staff, students, and a member of the local
community. These included readings from works such as
Andersonville, Brave New World, and All
Quiet on the Western Front. The second luncheon
program on October 13th featured Dr. Miles Cooper, GSW
faculty, and Sherry Ratliff from the Sumter County Voter
Registration office who provided an informative and
lively discussion on civic participation and voter
registration. The next Library Luncheon will be held on
October 31st when the Library will host its first Annual
Pumpkin Decorating Contest. This contest is open to all
individuals and groups from GSW and the surrounding
community who would like to participate. The Library
will provide the pumpkins and decorating supplies. The
last luncheon program for the Fall semester will be held
on Friday, November 17th. An international program on
"Holidays in Other Countries" will be presented by GSW’s
ESL Program students. We hope you will join us for these
interesting programs held in the Third World Room on
level 2 of the Library, 11-1.
These are but a few of
the JEC Library’s new collections, services, and events.
We invite you to stop by the Library, browse through our
historical collection in the beautifully refurbished
Macy Bishop Gray Room, view the various displays in
conjunction with the historical collection, and
participate in our luncheon program series.

The
History of Georgia Southwestern State University
Part VIII
The Centennial Issue
On September
21, 2006, the James Earl Carter Library officially
opened the Georgia Southwestern State University's
Historical Collection, housed in the Macy Bishop Gray
Rare Books Room. The opening was the culmination of 5
years of ideas, discussions, and hard work involving
nearly every department on campus.
The end results were
well worth theeffort. The Collection
includes papers, books, and artwork from GSW faculty,
staff, students, and alumni (past and present). There is
also a Presidential display containing memorabilia for
the eight presidents that have governed GSW. Throughout
the Library there are several display cases with
historical material. These relate to the Nursing program
at GSW, Charles Wheatley, the Faculty Women's Club, and
a selection of pictures and papers, including the 1934
budget for GSW.
Making the opening extra
special was the presence of Mildred Tietjen, former
director of the Library, who signed copies of her book,
A Century of Achievement, 1906-2006: Georgia
Southwestern State University. Mrs. Tietjen had many
anecdotes pertaining to the history of the University
and the Library.
A large crowd attended
the opening, and enjoyed the fellowship and
refreshments. The Collection is open to the public, so
please feel free to come reminisce at your convenience.

The Spotlight: The Macy Bishop Gray Rare Books Room
The Macy Bishop Gray Rare Books Room was dedicated in 1983.
As the James Earl Carter Library’s contribution to GSW’s
Centennial Celebration, the room has been refurbished and now
houses the Rare Books Collection as well as the new Historical
Collection. This new collection contains works by members of
GSW’s past and present faculty and staff, from books and
articles to works of art.
The Historical Collection contains the new Presidents
Display, which honors each of GSW’s eight presidents. The
cabinet, as well as the room’s shelving, was built by our own
Wayne Bradley and is a fine piece of carpentry. Each president
has his own shelf, with newspaper clippings and published works.
In the drawers below the shelves, meeting minutes from Academic
Affairs and other campus committees can be found.
The pictures hung within the room are of the campus and its
people throughout the history of the institution. Some are from
back when GSW was known as the State Agricultural and Normal
College. There is a records cabinet given to us by John Paul
Jones, former music professor at GSW, and above it hangs a
portrait of Macy Gray as well as two of her diplomas and two
service recognition plaques.
Also part of our Historical Collection are three displays
honoring the Wheatleys, the Nursing Class of 1959, and the
1970-1980’s Women’s Faculty Club. These displays are located
next to the Circulation Desk, next to the Oral History Center,
and on the second level at the top of the stairs, respectively.
The room will be kept unlocked during regular business hours.
Most of the items in the room, including those in the glass
cases, can be checked out via Special Check-Out forms. Please
see someone at the Circulation Desk for help.
