America: History and Life. Vol. 6 (1969)+ . Located on the Index Tables, south side of Reference. Quarterly issues and annual volumes. Covers 2,000+ journals in 40 languages. Provides abstracts of articles and citations of book reviews and dissertations on the history and life of the United States and Canada. Organized into: North America, Canada, and the U.S. National history is divided into chronological periods, topics, and local history. Includes related subjects such as historiography. Separate indices of subjects, authors, book and film titles, and reviewers. This index has a problem of currency, the usual lag time for citation of articles being one to two years, occasionally three to four years. America: History and Life is not yet available in GALILEO.

Writings on American History: A Subject Bibliography of Articles. REF Z1236 .D68; 1961-1982. Located on the shelves in the Reference department. Annual bibliography indexing over 600 journals. Organized by chronological period, geography, and subjects. Provides bibliographic data, but no annotations. Author index.

Organized by topic; each is sub-divided. All annotations are by scholars in the field and all are signed. Most of the citations are of books, but major articles are also included. This stands as the premier bibliography of world history.

    REF D 20 .F72 1990 Reference Sources in History: An Introductory Guide. 1990. A well-annotated list of 685 outstanding reference works in history. It is organized into 14 topical sections. Indexed. The best single guide to the reference sources in history.

    REF Z 1236 .H27 1974 Harvard Guide to American History. Rev. ed., 2 vols., 1974. Organized into 56 large topics, each sub-divided. Citations, but without full bibliographic data; no annotations. Provides lengthy indices. Still the outstanding subject bibliography of American history.

    REF E 174.5 .M847 1976 Encyclopedia of American History. 1976. Presents a detailed chronology of political history and of topics, e.g. the Supreme Court, and 500 biographies. One large index. Perhaps the premier single chronology of American history.

    REF E 176.1 .K3 Facts About the Presidents. 6th ed., 1993. Presents a wealth of information on each president including personal life and administration. Index.

    REF CT 100 .C8 Current Biography. 1940+ . Monthly issues; annual compilation. Alphabetical presentation of biographies, some running to several pages, and some with bibliographies. A separate section carries obituaries.

    REF CT 101 .D5 Dictionary of International Biography. Vol. 1 (1963)-Vol. 21 (1991). Annual volumes present brief biographies in a paragraph each. Emphasizes international, rather than American, subjects.

    REF CT 103 .W4 Webster’s Biographical Dictionary. An outstanding example of an encyclopedia collection of thousands of names prominent in history. Provides brief details of personal roles and accomplishments.

    REF CT 120 .I5 The International Who’s Who. Vol. 26 (1962)-Vol. 62 (1998-99). Annual volumes providing brief biographies of some 20,000 "gifted contemporaries." Emphasizes international, rather than American, subjects.

    REF CT 213 .A68 1999 American National Biography. 24 vols. Large collection of biographies published in 1999. Some articles are lengthy, running several pages. Each article is signed by the author and contains a bibliography. The authors are known scholars in the field. Volume 24 contains several indices.

    REF CT 103 .C26 The Cambridge Biographical Encyclopedia. 15,000 entries on dead and living persons. Numerous appendices.

    REF CT 230 .G46 Georgia Biographical Dictionary. 1994. Biographies of dead and living persons prominent in Georgia history. Some articles run several pages. Lists neither authors, nor editors, nor bibliographies.

    REF CT 3260 .N57 Notable American Women. 4 vols. in two series: 1607-1950 and "The Modern Period." Provides lengthy articles written by scholars in the field. Articles contain bibliographies.

    REF DA 28 .D47 The Dictionary of National Biography. The classic collection of historical British biographies. The first set, of 22 volumes, covers to 1900. Articles are detailed, some running many pages; each signed by the author and providing bibliography. Volumes have been published periodically after 1900, the most recent covering 1971 to 1980.

    REF DA 28 .W6 Who’s Who. 1959+ . Annual volume provides short biographies of prominent living British subjects.

    REF E 176 .D56 Dictionary of American Biography. Substantial articles by leading scholars. Each article is signed and includes a bibliography. The set of 22 volumes was published from 1928 to 1937; 8 supplements were published to 1980. A comprehensive index covers Vol. 1 through Supplement Eight. The "DAB" is the classic compilation of American biography.

    REF E 176 .N27 The National Cyclopedia of American Biography. Vol. 1 (1898)-Vol. N63 (1984). Substantial articles; does not give authors of articles or bibliographies. The separate volume of index, at the end of the set, is essential because the biographies are not in alphabetical order.

    REF E 176 .W642 Who’s Who in America. Vol. 16 (1930-31)-Vol. 53 (1999). Annual volumes list thousands of living Americans.

    REF E 176 .W647 Who’s Who of American Women. Vol. 7 (1972-73)-Vol. 17 (1991-92). Annual volumes provide brief biographies of over 30,000 living American women.

    REF E 185.96 .W53 Who’s Who Among African Americans. Vol. 6 (1990-91)-Vol. 10 (1998-99). Annual volumes provide thousands of brief biographies of prominent living African Americans.

    1. Cambridge Histories

    REF D 117 .C3 The Cambridge Medieval History. 8 vols. First published in 1911, it is still the classic compilation of medieval chronological history; the articles are by the leading scholars of the field. The bibliographies are lengthy and, although dated, are still to be consulted. Indices and maps.

    REF D 208 .C16 The Cambridge Modern History. 13 vols. First published in 1902, it is the old classic compilation of articles by prominent scholars. The bibliographies are still to be consulted. Volume 13 contains numerous appendices and a single index of the set. See also the "New" version, below.

    REF D 208 .N4 The New Cambridge Modern History. 14 vols. Published from 1964 to 1970, this is an all-new compilation of articles covering modern history from the Renaissance to 1945. Each volume has an index. Volume 13 is a collection of articles on topics; Volume 14 is an atlas.

    REF DT 20 .C27 The Cambridge History of Africa. 8 vols. In the style of the Cambridge series, it presents detailed articles in a chronological framework. Contains indices and bibliographies.

    NOTE: The Cambridge Ancient History, D57 .C25, is in the Main Collection of books. Its 12 volumes cover from Prehistory to A.D. 324. Each volume contains bibliographies, charts, maps, and indices.

    REF F 281 .C71 The Colonial Records of the State of Georgia. 26 vols. 1904-1916.

    1. Historiography

    REF D 14 .G74 Great Historians from Antiquity to 1800: An International Dictionary.

    REF D 14 .G75 Great Historians of the Modern Age: An International Dictionary. These volumes are organized by civilization or nationality and contain substantial articles on historians written by scholars in the field. Each article is signed and contains a bibliography.

  2. Galileo Databases

Go to the GALILEO homepage, select "Databases," then "Government Publications," then Georgia Net—Georgia Department of Archives and History. This is the web site of the state department of archives and history. At present, there is no search engine for the department’s archival holdings. The best alternative is to go to the National Union Catalog of Manuscript Collections (NUCMC), see below, which includes many Georgia sources. The Georgia Net site provides many appropriate links for history research.

Provides a single search engine of its database that includes many manuscript collections in Georgia.
