  1. Periodical Indices in Print (Located on the index tables, south side of Reference)

Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature. Vol. 1 (1955)-to present. Issued quarterly. Lists articles from over 1,200 nursing and health-related journals from around the world. Includes other articles, books, dissertations, conference proceedings, and audio-visual materials. Topics are in alphabetical order, with sub-topics in order. For articles since 1982, one should consult the online databases CINAHL and EBSCO which have abstracts and some full-text articles

Abridged Index Medicus. Vol. 4 (1973)-Vol. 28 (1997). Published by the National Library of Medicine. Lists articles from 120 English-language journals on all topics of medicine. Indexed by subject and author. Ceased publication in 1997 when superceded by online database PubMed which indexes articles back to 1966.

International Nursing Index. Vol. 1 (1966)-Vol. 15 (1980). Topical index of articles from over 200 nursing journals representing countries around the world.

AJN. Monthly. Official journal of the American Nurses Association.  Coverage of all topics of interest to nurses such as diagnoses, treatments, medicines, recent research, ethics, and work-related issues.  Attractive format, colorful, easy to read, and well-illustrated.  The articles are brief and not footnoted but do list references.  Many advertisements.  Published since 1900.

Holdings: 1970+ Bound.

Nursing and Health Care Perspectives. Bimonthly. Published by the National League for Nursing. Focuses on nursing education.

Holdings: Vol. 16 (1995)+ Bound.

Nursing Outlook. Bimonthly. Published by the American Academy of Nursing. Focuses on nursing as a profession (education, careers, practices, issues). Articles are footnoted and tend to be substantial. Contains little advertising.

Holdings: 1954+ Bound; 1953-72 Microfilm.

Nursing Research. Bimonthly. Scholarly and substantial articles report on new research in the field. Lists references at ends of articles. Contains little advertising.

Holdings: 1964+ Bound; 1952-79 Microfilm.

RN. Monthly. Similar style to AJN. Has attractive and colorful format. Articles are brief but contain "References." In contrast to AJN, it slants more to the profession of nursing rather than problems, research, and treatments.

Holdings: Vol. 21 (1958), Vol. 23-25 (1960-62), Vol. 29 (1966)+ Bound.

Research in Nursing and Health. Bimonthly. Thoroughly scholarly, lengthy, and substantial articles. As the title indicates, it is devoted to reporting on the latest research in the field. All articles are well-documented in sources. Each issue contains fewer than 10 articles. No advertising. Very expensive to purchase.

REF RT 48.6 .P63 1997 Pocket Guide to Nursing Diagnoses. Brief guide to diagnoses under broad topics with suggestions for care. Index. Most useful as a quick reference in plain English.

REF RT 48.6 .S66 1998 Nursing Diagnosis Reference Manual. Another brief guide, but more extensive than above. Divided into adult health, adolescent, child, maternal, geriatric, and community. Well-indexed and cross-refernced.

REF RT 86.7 .N88 1996 Nurses Legal Handbook. Brief, well-organized guide to many legal issues in the nursing profession: patients’ rights, legal responsibilities on the job, malpractice, documentation, and ethics. Well-indexed.

REF RT 90 .C36 1996 Mosby’s Handbook of Patient Teaching. Dictionary style listing of medical problems with emphasis on teaching patients in home care. Uses plain English. Indexed.

REF R 121 .M89 1998 Mosby's Medical Nursing and Allied Health Dictionary.  Extensive (2,000 pages) dictionary of terms used in nursing.  Some articles are lengthy. Includes everyday terms.  Well-illustrated. Appendices.

REF RC 55 .N4 1987 The Merck Manual of Diagnosis and Therapy. Librarians generally consider this to be the single best handbook of medical information. It is extensive (2,600 pages), detailed, and scientific. Well-indexed.

REF RC 69 .P77 1997 Professional Guide to Signs and Symptoms. Alphabetical listing of signs and symptoms of medical conditions. Articles describe various aspects as causes and care. Well-indexed.

REF RM 101 .C87 1998 Conn’s Current Therapy 1998. Organized into seventeen areas, this is a vast, detailed, and scientific description of the treatment of medical problems. Indexed.

REF RM 138 .S59 1998 Mosby’s 1998 Nursing Drug Reference. Alphabetical listing of medicines with rather concise and descriptions in plain English.

REF RM 301.12 .N88 1999 Saunders Nursing Drug Handbook 1999. Similar to the work above, although perhaps not quite as well-organized and easy to use.

REF RS 51 .U65 1995 Complete Drug Reference. A Consumer Reports book. Similar to the PDR, this work is designed for the general public. Vast (1,700 pages) but well-organized, easy to use, and in plain English.

REF RS 75 .P5 1999 Physician’s Desk Reference. Commonly called the "PDR," it is an encyclopedia of products used in medical treatment. Includes brand and generic name index, product category index, photos of the products, descriptions of over 2,200 pharmaceuticals, and much more.

REF RS 75 .P37 1999 PDR Companion Guide. Indices to accompany the PDR above including product interaction and side effects.
