Library Newsletter Spring 2002
In This Issue:
From The
Director's Desk
One of the most enjoyable aspects
of my position is the opportunity to meet and talk with Library
supporters. I recently had such an occasion (which is
described in greater detail elsewhere in this issue) during a
reception held in honor of Anna Cheokas, local artist and writer,
who donated to the Library 5 folios of her art work and writings
and a beautiful painting of the Administration building.
Mrs. Cheokas and her friend, Mrs. Gladys Crabb, provided me with
interesting information and anecdotes pertaining to GSW and the
surrounding region. This was a particular interest to me
since one of the Library's Centennial projects is to create a GSW
Historical Collection to be housed in what we hope will be a
refurnished and renovated Macy Bishop Grey Rare books Room.
It occurred to me that our Newsletter readership may well be able
to provide us information and assistance in this endeavor.
The Library would welcome any
information from our Newsletter readers about authors with some
sort of connection to GSW and works (fiction or nonfiction) which
may related in some way to GSW. Although our Centennial is
not until 2006, we must now begin to collect information and
materials for the GSW Historical Collection if it is to be
completed in time for our Centennial! If you have any
information or materials you would like to forward for the
collection, please contact the Library. We appreciate any
assistance!
Our second Centennial project is
the refurbishing and preservation of the "Jimmy Carter: From
Farm Boy to the Presidency" exhibit on level 2 which is
beginning to show the effects of age. This popular exhibit
traces the life of President and Mrs. Carter up to his
inauguration as the 39th President of the United States. The
Library welcomes contributions towards the completion of this
project.
Again, our thanks and appreciation
go out to the Library's supporters. We are grateful to all
for their assistance. I would like to extend an invitation
to all to drop by the Library. It would give me great
pleasure to give you a tour of the Library and express my
appreciation and gratitude in person. I look forward to
hearing from you.

Anna Cheokas Donates
Art Works to Georgia Southwestern State University!
Georgia Southwestern State
University is the delighted recipient of a donation of art and
writings by Anna Cheokas. Mrs. Cheokas is an Americus
resident and artist well known for her paintings and poetry.
She has donated 5 folios of her art works and writings and a
lovely watercolor of the GSW Administration building to the James
Earl Carter Library. The folios contain detailed historical
sketches of scenes and sites of Sumter County with their
explanatory notes and accompanying poems and provide an excellent
historical and aesthetic record of local history. Other
folios contain sketches, watercolors, essays, poems and sayings on
a variety of subjects.
A reception was held on Tuesday,
March 5th in the Library's Macy Bishop Grey Rare Books Room and
was attended by GSW President Dr. Michael Hanes, members of the
GSW administration, library staff, family and friends. The
watercolor painting of the GSW Administration building can be seen
immediately inside the Library's entrance and the folios of art
works and writings can be seen in the Library's Macy Bishop Grey
Rare Books Room. We are grateful to Mrs. Cheokas for her
generous gift which will benefit the GSW community for generations
to come.

Interlibrary Loan/Access Services Assistant: Valerie Blanchard
I am Valerie Blanchard, the
Interlibrary Loan/Access Services Assistant here at the James Earl
Carter Library. The library offers Ill services to all
currently enrolled students, faculty, and staff. This
service can be used to obtain items not owned by our library and
not available via GALILEO or the Internet. Thanks to new
technology, I can usually get an article within a matter of days
while books generally take a bit longer. I use software
called Ariel, which allows libraries to send and receive documents
via a scanner and modem. Some libraries, like ours, send
articles to the borrowing library the same day they receive the
requests. Books take 3-10 days to arrive, depending on where
I can locate them and what method of shipping is used. All
University System of Georgia libraries use UPS 2-Day shipping,
while most other Georgia and out-of-state libraries use regular
USPS mail.
In the past couple of years, it has
become easier than ever to access our library's services.
Patrons can come by the library and pick up ILL request forms at
the Circulation Desk, for both books and articles, or they may
send an email to libill@canes.gsw.edu.
Email requests for books must include the books title, author, and
preferably publication date. Email requests for articles
must include journal title, article title, article author, volume,
date, and page numbers. I am usually able to get audiovisual
materials, but since most libraries do not lend these it takes a
bit longer.
In my spare time, I am taking
classes in Valdosta State University's new Master of Library and
Information Science program. I graduated from GSW with a BS
in Mathematics, all the while knowing that I wanted to pursue a
career in librarianship. I worked as a student assistant in
our library the entire time I was at GSW and was hired as the ILL
Assistant upon graduation. The next step was to begin
working on my MLIS when the opportunity arose. When Valdosta
introduced their MLIS program, I joined with the help and support
of my coworkers and former math professors and am now in my second
semester. I am still not certain what type of library I will
want to work in, so I am keeping my options open and am choosing a
wide array of classes. Please email me at libill@canes.gsw.edu
for any ILL requests, questions, or comments.

Library Hosts South
Georgia Associated Libraries Meeting
On February 8, 2002, the James Earl
Carter Library co-hosted the biannual meeting of the South Georgia
Associated Libraries (SGAL) group. SGAL membership consists
of all types of libraries: public, private, academic, and special
libraries located in the southern half of the state. The
meeting was held in the Library's new computer lab and began with
a welcoming address by Dr. Steve Batson, Vice President for
University Relations. An informative presentation and
demonstration by Dean Crumbley from Administrative Computing on
Smart Board functions and security issues was also featured.
After the conclusion of the
business session and brief tours of the Library, the SGAL members
had a luncheon, prepared by Ric Acosta and his staff, in the
private dining room at the Marshall Student Center. The
meeting concluded with tours of the Lake Blackshear Regional
Library, co-hosts for the event.
