Library Newsletter Fall 2005
In This Issue:
From The
Dean's Desk
GSW has officially entered its Centennial Year of
celebration! The Library is pleased to announce the
completion of its Carter Display centennial project. A
committee of Kay Bell, Tishana Smith, and Amy Wise
coordinated this project from beginning to end and can
take great pride in its successful conclusion.
On March 15 th,
President Carter, on campus to give the convocation
address and present the Dolores Capitan Writing Across
the Curriculum awards, stopped by the JEC Library to
visit the Faculty Art Exhibit and to view the
refurbished and updated President Jimmy and Rosalynn
Carter display on level 2. He stated that he was very
pleased with the renovated exhibit and shared several
anecdotes relating to some of the photos displayed. He
also took a moment to reacquaint himself with the
refurbished photo display commemorating his father, for
whom the Library is named, and to enjoy the display in
which his mother, Ms. Lillian Carter, is fondly
remembered. We felt very honored by his visit.
Our other centennial project, the creation of a GSW
Historical Collection to be housed in the renovated Macy
Bishop Gray Rare Books Room, is progressing at a good
pace. It is anticipated that a formal opening event will
be held in September 2006. Kristi Peavy and Valerie
Stroyls, members of the committee working on this
project coordinated by Claudia Black, created three
exhibits illustrating various elements of the GSW
Historical Collection. On level one, you will find two
exhibits: one displaying items relating to Charles H.
Wheatley, the other honoring the GSW Nursing School,
Class of ’59. On level two, a display has been created
about the GSW Faculty Women’s Club.
We invite everyone to come by and view these
displays. They include numerous items donated or on long
term loan to the Library by alumni and others connected
to the University. Examples include the UGA SEC 1976
football that can be found in the Wheatley display and
the scrapbook and nursing cap in the Nursing Display
provided by Sandra Griffin Wardell. We are very grateful
to all of you who have contributed to these centennial
projects and to the Library. We truly appreciate your
continuing support!

The
History of Georgia Southwestern State University - Part VII
1980-1999
The 1980’s saw
Georgia Southwestern College under the administration of
Dr. William H. Capitan and continuing to grow and
support the four-year institution status. At the
December 1981 commencement ceremony, President Jimmy
Carter was awarded an honorary degree and delivered the
commencement address. In 1982, a Specialist in Education
degree was approved, and in 1983 and 1986 respectively,
the college gained Masters programs in Administration
and Computer Science. Three dedications took place in
1983: Duncan Hall in honor of Beth King Duncan, Jordan
Hall in honor of Mary Lou Jordan, and the Library’s Rare
Books Room in honor of Macy Bishop Gray.
1984 was a busy year for
the college. SACS reaffirmed accreditation for the
institution, and the Bachelor of Nursing degree was
accredited by the National League for Nursing. The
Bachelor of Fine Arts in Art and the Bachelor of Arts in
Music degrees were approved, and the first of the GSW
100 freshman orientation classes were taught. GSW began
participating in the Elderhostel network, and the
Lakehouse was renovated.
In 1987, the Rosalynn
Carter Institute for Caregiving was approved for GSW by
the Board of Regents. In 1988 the ground-breaking
ceremony was held for what is now our Education Center,
and that same year the Asian Language and Culture Center
opened under the administration of Dr. Don Lee. The
Library also saw changes in 1988 with the addition of a
classroom, now used as a computer lab, and the expansion
of the reference area.
The next decade began
with the opening of the new Education Center, the
dedication of the bell tower, and the opening and
dedication of the Deriso pool. SACS reaffirmed our
accreditation again in 1994, and in 1996 the institution
officially became Georgia Southwestern State University.
In 1997 Dr. Michael Hanes was inaugurated as the 9th
president of Georgia Southwestern State University.
Coming attractions: Fall
2006 will be our Centennial issue. The information for
this article was taken from two decades of The
Sou’wester, the student newspaper. The library owns
bound copies of The Sou’wester dating from 1962 to the
present.

In the Spotlight: Kristi Peavy

The James Earl Carter Library is very glad to welcome the new
Interlibrary Loan Assistant, Kristi Peavy! Kristi joined the
James Earl Carter Library’s Access Services department at the
beginning of Spring semester. She will be performing the daily
operations of Interlibrary Loan and will be Collection
Development liaison for the Geology/Physics, Chemistry, and
Biology departments.
Kristi is a recent graduate of GSW, where she obtained a
Bachelor of Science in History as well as the certificate for
European Union Studies. She became interested in libraries and
archiving when she helped the museum curator at Andersonville
during an internship. Born in Miami, she grew up in Fitzgerald,
GA, and currently resides down the road in Vienna. Kristi is
married with two children and likes to read and collect antique
Christmas ornaments.
Please join us in welcoming Kristi to the GSW community!
Claudia
Black, Access Services Supervisor, found the following
poem in a May 1964 issue of The Sou’Wester, GSW’s
student newspaper. It won first prize in a Library Staff
poetry contest held during National Library Week of that
year. The author is Larry Leigh.
The Library
Enter my doors in silence
please
With this one thought in
mind…
To read, to learn, and feast
upon
The fruits you’re sure to
find.
Pass not quickly through
this room,
But slowly, and with much
care,
For in each row, on every
shelf,
There’s knowledge hidden
there.
Choose at will the book you
may
Or whate’er you’d like to
read,
And on some pages within its
covers
It’s sure to fill your need.
It’s very wise to visit me,
So come whene’er you can
To read, and write, and
meditate,
And leave a wiser man.
Congratulations Mrs. Betty!

Mrs. Betty Harris (front left)
retired on February 24, 2006. She has been with GSW for 37
years, and worked in the
library for almost 10 of those. We will miss seeing her every day,
and we wish her the best of luck!
