What's New at the Library


Library Luncheon Series: Works o' the Irish
 

The James Earl Carter Library would like to invite all members of the GSW community to a St. Patrick’s Day “Lunches at the Library” event celebrating Irish authors. On Monday, March 17th, from 11:00 a.m. – 12:30 p.m., individuals will be reading passages aloud from their favorite Irish author. If you would like, you can bring your own bagged lunch. We will provide refreshments such as cookies, chips and soda. If you are interested in participating in the readings, please sign up to read from your favorite Irish author by contacting Kristi Peavy at kpeavy@canes.gsw.edu or at 229-931-2266 by March 12th.

 

English-to-Spanish Medication Direction Chart
The Southwest Georgia Public Health District has uploaded an English-to-Spanish medication direction chart to its Web site to help pharmacists and other health care providers direct Spanish speakers on how to take their medication.  The chart can be found by clicking here or by going to http:// www.southwestgeorgiapublichealth.org and clicking on “English-to-Spanish prescription conversion chart” under the “Promotion” heading.

 

Library Luncheon Series:

Banned Books
On Thursday October 4th, the library hosted it's first luncheon series of the Fall semester.  The luncheon celebrated Banned Books Week.  GSW faculty, staff and students enjoyed readings from a wide range of books including:  Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck, The Lovely Bones by Alice Sebold, Heather Has Two Mommies by Leslea Newman, The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton.

         

Pumpkin Decoration Contest

        


The Library hosted its Second Annual Pumpkin Decorating Contest on Tuesday, October 30th. There was a large crowd on the lawn carving and painting pumpkins. It was especially nice to see such a diverse student population at the event. The Library is looking forward to our Spring programs, including readings from our favorite Irish authors on St. Patrick's Day. We hope to see you all there!
 

   

 

Library News

The Library was fortunate to receive two new Dell computers which are located on the second level of the James Earl Carter Library.  The computers are equipped with Microsoft Office 2007 and have access to the internet. Please feel free to use these computers for your academic use!

     

 

Jack Riggs, author of When the Finch Rises, visits the Library

On Wednesday October 10th, the Library also hosted the book signing for author Jack Riggs, the featured convocation speaker. Riggs is the author of When the Finch Rises which is the book various English classes read for the semester. He teaches Creative Writing and Film studies at Georgia Perimeter College in Atlanta.

     

 

June Hall McCash, Ph.D visits the Library

      

On September 12, 2007, the James Earl Carter Library housed the reception and book signing for June Hall McCash, Ph.D.  McCash is the author, co-author or editor of six books and numerous articles. Three of her books explore the history of Jekyll Island, Ga., and three are over medieval literature. Her most recently published books are "Jekyll Island’s Early Years" and "The Life of Saint Audrey: A Text by Marie de France." McCash has also appeared in three film documentaries about Jekyll Island and on ABC’s "Good Morning, America."

She is currently professor emerita of French and Humanities at Middle Tennessee State University (MTSU) in Murfreesboro, Tn. McCash was the recipient of the MTSU Foundation’s most prestigious honor, the Award for Career Achievement, in 2003 and the Distinguished Research Award in 1996.

The library currently owns two of McCash's books, "The Jekyll Island Cottage Colony" and "Jekyll Island's Early Years".  Please stop by to check out these books!

 

The Library Welcomes Mary 'Ru' Story-Huffman as Reference Librarian

Mary "Ru" L. Story-Huffman joined the Library’s staff as the Reference Librarian/Government Information Coordinator/Assistant Professor.  As the Reference Librarian she will assist the Library’s patrons with all of their reference needs.  Ru received her BA in English Literature from Buena Vista College in Iowa and her MLS from Emporia State University in Kansas.  She has completed her coursework for Nova University's PhD program in Information Science. For the past 12 years, Ru served as the Public Services Librarian at the University of the Cumberlands in Kentucky.  Prior to that, for 2 years, she was Assistant Director of the Pine Forest Regional Library in Richton, Mississippi. She is a member of the ALA and its Library Instruction Roundtable, ACRL and its Education and Behavioral Sciences Section and its Reference and User Services Section, and Delta Kappa Gamma.  Her publications include "Privacy International Web Site Review" for the Journal of Government Information and she has written numerous articles for The Big6 eNewsletter.  Ru is married to Dr. Charles "Chuck" Huffman who is also joining the GSW faculty as Associate Professor of Psychology.  They have 3 children.  Please join us in welcoming Ru to the GSW Community!

 

The Library Welcomes John Wilson as Interlibrary Loan/Access Services Assistant

John Wilson joined the Library’s staff as the Interlibrary Loan Assistant in July 2007.  As the ILL Assistant, John will assist faculty, staff, and students with any of their requests from other libraries.  John was born and raised in Americus, GA.  He received a BA in English from Georgia Southwestern State University and plans to pursue a Master’s degree in Library Science in the future.  John previously worked as the managing editor of the Cordele Dispatch and as a guard at the Sumter County Correctional Institute.  John is married to Gena Wilson, who gave birth to their new baby boy Jake on August 31, 2007.  Please join us in welcoming John to the GSW Community.                                                                                              

 

Kristi Peavy is the new Access Services Supervisor

Kristi Peavy is the new Access Services Supervisor.  Kristi took over the position after Claudia Black retired May 2007, giving the Library 13 years of service.  Kristi joined the Library's staff in January 2006 as the ILL Assistant.  She has a BS in History with European Certification.  She is currently pursuing a MLIS from Valdosta State University.  She is married to Quinnen Peavy and they have 2 children. Please join us in congratulating Kristi on her new position!

 

 

The Library Welcomes Valarie Anthony as Senior Technical/Access Services Assistant

Valarie Anthony was born and raised in Leslie, GA, a small town outside of Americus. She received her BBA in Management from Georgia Southwestern State University.  Valarie also worked at the James Earl Carter Library as a Student Assistant from 2003 until the time she graduated in May 2006.  As the Sr. Tech./Access Services Assistant, Valarie will provide technical support to the library’s staff and patrons and assist in access services duties. In her spare time, she enjoys reading and spending time with family and friends.  Please join us in welcoming Valarie to the GSW Community!
