ITAC meeting minutes from 1/19/05 1. OIIT budget: Gary Fisk mentioned that the President said that OIIT budget was being cut by about $120,000 in a recent Faculty Senate meeting. This is largely money that was saved by not hiring a replacement for Anthony Ianno and hiring a lower paid person to fill Janice Cliett's position. Jim Neale said that he feels that OIIT should bring in grant money. OIIT will need a director and more investment to make this possible. 2. GSW ID on student ID cards: The student ID cards have the GSW ID plus an extra tracking number on the end. This has caused some confusion because sometimes student think that the tracking number is part of their ID. The committee members feel that this is a poor practice. Fisk thought there should be a different place on the card for the tracking number. Arvind Shah said that there could be a blank (or something) between the GSW ID and the tracking number to make it more clear that the tracking number and the ID number are separate. Carl Mueller said that this is a bad system but it is probably too late to change it now. Royce Hackett said that they will work to educate faculty and other WebCT users that students are sometimes confused when they get their GSW ID from the ID card. 3. Online testing center: Lovely Lewis said that it is possible to arrange for a proctored online exams. Anyone who needs a proctored exam can contact Lewis and she will make the arrangements. Lois Oliver also does some online test proctoring for Ecore students. Neale said that the School of Education is already doing this on some weekends, so it may be possible to do this in conjunction with Education. Shah said that CIS is doing proctored testing with some tech schools. Hackett siad that we should start small, on a case by case basis. It is unlikely that we will be able to start an online testing center at the present time due to budget constraints. 4. Faculty computers: The status of the recent request for possible faculty computer upgrades is unclear. OIIT submitted a computer inventory to the administration with outdated computers. The Deans also sent lists of their technology needs to the administration. It is uncertain what will happen to these requests. This discussion prompted someone to bring up the current status student technology fee funds, which is also somewhat unclear. There may be an additional $10,000 of student tech fee money left to be spent. The status of this money will be more clear in a few weeks. It should be noted that these student technology fee funds cannot be used to purchase faculty computers. 5. Webmaster: Tim Faircloth is now the webmaster/systems administrator. He has taken over the role of webmaster from Svetlana Peltsverger. 6. SPSS licensing: Paul Shapiro bought the SPSS licenses (6 month) for Fall using Mix Foundation money from the Psych/Soc Department. OIIT needs an invoice stating how much was spent so they can be reimbursed. The money for these licenses will need to be reallocated in the Fall when the licenses expire. Faculty SPSS licenses are also a potential problem. OIIT paid for faculty licensing for this academic year, but this will not continue next year. We cannot do a networked version of SPSS for all faculty, as previously recommended by ITAC, due to lack of hardware/software capabilities. UGA is currently looking into a getting licenses for a low cost student version but this hasn't been approved yet. 7. Hackett is working on a Tech Fee report to the BOR. He received suggestions and feedback. 8. The committee recommended asking Darcy Schraufnagel if we could get another student representative who is able to meet at 3:00 on Wednesdays. The appointed student representative, Antony Ware, cannot attend at this time. Next meeting: March 30 at 3:00 in the Morgan Hall Conference Room. Attendance: Stephanie Harvey, Jim Neale, Ginger Perry, Vera Weisskopf, Arvind Shah, Nancy Morris, Lovely Lewis, Gary Fisk, Carl Mueller, Steve Galatas, Royce Hackett, and Bryan Davis.
