Eudora
Checking and Receiving Mail
You can manually check for mail, or set up Eudora to check for
mail automatically.
To check for mail manually, do the following:
- Select File > Check Mail.
- If Eudora prompts for your password, type your password
in the Password dialog box and click OK (passwords are
"case-sensitive").
- If there is no new mail, a "No New Mail" alert is displayed;
click OK.
- If you have new mail, Eudora transfers the messages one by one
and then displays a "New Mail" alert; click OK.
- New messages are delivered to your In mailbox. This mailbox
opens automatically and your new message summaries are added to
the end of the existing mailbox summaries. Double-click on a
message summary to open it, or select the message summary and
press Enter.
To set up automatic mail checking, do the following:
- Select Tools > Options (Mac: select Special > Settings).
- Select the Checking Mail category.
- In the Check for mail every xx minute(s) field, type the
number of minutes between automatic mail checks (15 is the minimum
interval recommended by Qualcomm).
(Mac: To turn on automatic mail checking, you must also check the
box in front of Check for mail every ? minutes.)
- Click OK to close the dialog box.
- Eudora automatically checks for mail at the interval you have
requested.
When automatic mail checking is on, the time of the next mail
check is listed next to the Check Mail command under the File
menu.
Attaching a Document
Any file (e.g., a Microsoft Word, WordPerfect, or Excel document)
can be attached to and sent with a Eudora message. Canes configured
to prevent attachments with the following extensions .exe and
.vbs. Such attachments almost always contain viruses. Size limit is
2Mb.
By default, Eudora uses MIME (Mac: AppleDouble) encoding to attach
files to messages.
To attach a file to a current outgoing message
- Select Message > Attach File (Mac: Message > Attach Document).
- The Attach File dialog is displayed.
- Locate the file, select it and click on the OK button to
attach the file to the message. Hold down Ctrl button to attach
multiple files.
- The attached file does not appear within the message text.
Instead, the full path name of the file is displayed in the
Attached: (Mac: X-Attachments:) field of the message header.
The person receiving a message with an attached file must have
MIME-compliant e-mail software in order to decode the file. The
recipient must also have software that can read the formatted
document.
Changing Your Password
You can reset your canes email password through SSH (see
instructions), or you need to request password change from
sysadm@canes.gsw.edu.
How to Suppress Recipient Lists
| To: |
This is where you
type the recipient's e-mail address. Multiple addresses are
allowed, but must be separated by commas.
If you leave the To: field blank, everyone who receives
the e-mail will see in the To: field "Recipient List
Suppressed". |
| Cc: |
E-mail address to
whom a copy of the message is to be sent. Multiple addresses are
allowed, but must be separated by commas. |
| Bcc: |
"Blind" carbon copy.
Address listed here will not appear in the header of the
recipients. This is useful when you want to send a copy of a
message to someone without everyone else knowing you did so.
Multiple addresses are allowed but must be separated by commas. |
If you have a list of addresses to which you'll be sending
frequently, Make an Address Book entry for this list:
- Click "New" button in your address book and enter a nickname
for this group.
- When you have named the group, put the addresses of the
recipients in the Address(es) field.
- In the Name box (Click on the info tab in Windows), give the
group a name. Keep in mind that this will be what will show on the
To: line when you use this nickname.
- Exit the address box and save at the prompt.
Now, whenever you want to send a message to that list, enter the
nickname that you gave the group in the To: field of the outgoing
message. The list of address will be suppressed. The people who get
your message will only see the name that is entered in the name box
not the list of addresses.
There is a second way to accomplish this as well. If you put the
addresses you want to conceal in the BCC line instead of in the TO
line in an outgoing message, they'll be hidden. Or if you leave the
To: field blank, everyone who receives the e-mail will see in the
To: field "Recipient List Suppressed".
