GSW student earns state honor for European Union research

AMERICUS--Georgia Southwestern State University senior Danny Smit, of Albany, was recently recognized with the "Best Paper" award for outstanding student research on the European Union, sponsored by the European Union Center of the University System of Georgia. 

During Spring Semester 2004, Smit presented his paper at the annual European Union Studies Student Conference in Macon. His research examined the integration of EU law across European countries, and focused on Romania's child welfare policy. 

For winning this statewide competition, Smit will receive a $100 prize and his paper will be published on the European Union Center of the University System of Georgia's Web site. 

"I would like to give credit to Dr. Steven Galatas, my professor and paper adviser at Georgia Southwestern, for his assistance," Smit said. "I never would have been able to achieve this without his support, and my involvement in the EU Studies Program." 

Smit graduated from Georgia Southwestern in May with a B.S. in political science.
