GSW receives grant from the Governor's Office of Highway Safety

AMERICUS--Georgia Southwestern State University has been awarded another year's worth of grant funding from the Georgia Governor's Office of Highway Safety (GOHS) to educate the campus community about the dangers of using alcohol or drugs, the dangers of driving while impaired, and to provide the community with general highway safety information.

The total grant award is $54,700 and the grant year runs from Oct. 1 through Sept. 30, 2005.

The grant maintains the office of the GOHS Young Adult Programs Liaison, who serves as the advisor to the GSW Chapter of the BACCHUS Peer Educators. The Young Adult Programs Liaison, Michelle Parnell, also works with other colleges and universities across the state to establish peer education programs on their campuses.

Additionally, the grant provides funding for GSW's Chapter of BACCHUS Peer Educators. Not only does the grant provide funding to employ the Peer Education Chapter's president, Antony Ware, to oversee peer education on campus, but it also allows for the purchase of materials to use for programming and for additional training for the Peer Educators.

The BACCHUS Peer Educators will be hosting a variety of activities for National Collegiate Alcohol Awareness Week, Oct. 18-23, including a Women & Alcohol program on Tuesday night at 8 p.m. in Jacob Hall and an information table in the Marshall Student Center Wednesday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

BACCHUS Peer Educator Chapter meetings are the first and third Mondays of each month starting at 5:15 p.m. For more information, contact Michelle Parnell at mparnell@canes.gsw.edu.
