GSW art students impress at
Macon art show
AMERICUS—Georgia Southwestern State University participated in the ninth annual scrap iron sculpture contest sponsored by Macon Iron at the Middle Georgia Art Association (MGAA) gallery March 20. This year’s theme was “Junque’ Yard Cats.”
The competition is held as a creative way to increase awareness of the importance of recycling. The 2009 entries had to be constructed primarily of recyclable metal materials from Macon Iron, and resemble some type of cat. GSW students nearly swept the competition, winning $1700 in group and individual prizes.
GSW winners included: (Group Projects); 1st Place “On the Prowl,” Sam Hendley, Devon Kestor and Ryan Bare; 2nd Place “Left for Dead,” Kalynn Partridge, Elise Boswell and Xavier Sims; 3rd Place “Flesh & Bones,” Ariana Serrano, Lajuan Sneed and Jason Griffeth; (Individual Projects) 1st Place “Cat Fight,” Douglas Durrance; 2nd Place “Fat Cat,” Leane Bryant; (Most Humorous) “GUNTHER,” Scott Wilkerson, Amy Young and Katie Ison; (Best Use of Materials) “Fat Cat.”
The sculptures will be on display through April 14 at the MGAA gallery in Macon. Gallery hours are Tuesday through Friday 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday from 12 p.m. to 3 p.m.
