GSW makes way for new residence hall

Down with the old—Construction workers began demolition of Complex III on Tuesday, Oct. 14. The Georgia Southwestern State University residence hall was constructed at a cost of $1.1 million in 1970. The new suite-style, 300-bed, upperclassmen residence hall (name to be determined) going up in its place will cost an estimated $14 million to complete with payment coming through a bond issue. As part of Georgia Southwestern’s sustainability initiative, brick, block and concrete rubble from the demolition will be used as filler for the new construction site. Razing of Complex III is scheduled to be complete by Nov. 6, and the University plans to open the new residence hall in August 2009, making way for students in the fall semester.
