Former Prisoner of War discusses life behind enemy lines
Shot down but not Shut out -- Retired Air Force Capt. and former member of the famed Tuskegee Airman Luther H. Smith reflects on his time in the cockpit at a convocation honoring POW/MIA's at Georgia Southwestern State University Friday, Sept. 21. Capt. Smith was shot down over Yugoslavia on his 133rd mission and held as a POW of the Germans for nearly a year (Oct. 1944 to May 1945). He and other former POWs in attendance were escorted onto GSW’s campus by members of the motorcycle riders group, Rolling Thunder. The convocation was one of four programs during the week sponsored by GSW, Andersonville National Historic Site and Rolling Thunder. Honoring those captured, this year’s event was themed “Race and the American POW.”
