GSW names newest residence hall

AMERICUS—With construction on a new 300-bed residence hall well under way, Georgia Southwestern State University’s (GSW) newest facility now has a name, Magnolia.

The University made the announcement Saturday, Feb. 28 between the Hurricane men’s and women’s basketball match up with Augusta State University.

The name is in keeping with the tree theme currently in place at two of GSW’s other residence halls, Southwestern Oaks and Southwestern Pines. Georgia Southwestern, faculty, staff, students and alumni all participated in the voting process, and they had six tree names to choose from: Cedar, Cypress, Dogwood, Loblolly, Magnolia and Peach (all trees are indigenous to southwest Georgia).  In all, nearly 850 votes were submitted.

Magnolia is the third residence hall built on the University’s campus in the last four years. It will feature suite-style living for upperclassmen and is scheduled for August 2009 completion.
