GSW art students knock the rust off competition

AMERICUS—Georgia Southwestern State University participated in the eighth annual scrap iron sculpture contest sponsored by Macon Iron at the Middle Georgia Art Association (MGAA) gallery March 21. This year’s theme was “Junque’ Yard Dawgs #2.”

The competition is held as a creative way to increase awareness of the importance of recycling. The 2008 entries had to be constructed primarily of recyclable metal materials from Macon Iron, and resemble some type of dog. GSW students fared well in the competition, winning $1,100 in group and individual prizes. The group awards totaled $1,000 and will be used to buy tools and supplies for the program, according to Professor Laurel Robinson.

GSW winners included: (Group Projects); 1st Place “Fenrir,” Jordan Walker, Zach Highnote, Greg Black, Leigh Ann Colley, Phylicia Corey, and Robert Grissett; 2nd Place “Paramount Silver, Batteries Not Included,” John Lin, Sunni Zemblowski, Skylar Jones, Courtney Bond, Ben Bronson and Felicity Leckman; 3rd Place “Sad Puppy,” Anissa Brightwell and Tammy Harris; (Individual Projects) 3rd Place “Springer Spaniel,” Zoe Alexandra.

The sculptures will be on display through April 12 at the MGAA gallery. Gallery hours are Tuesday through Friday 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday from 12 p.m. to 3 p.m.
