GSW partners with Weyerhaeuser Company Foundation AMERICUS--Georgia Southwestern State University (GSW) recently received a $5000 grant from the Weyerhaeuser Company Foundation to support the GSW Water Quality Laboratory and education program “Over the last two decades, Weyerhaeuser has been one of GSW’s most consistent benefactors,” said Public Relations Director and Development Officer Stephen Snyder. “Their support has given Dr. Hap Tietjen and GSW’s Biology Department opportunity to conduct critical research on much of Southwest Georgia’s ecosystem.” This year’s grant money will allow GSW’s Water Quality Laboratory to purchase useful research and education equipment. “Weyerhaeuser Company Foundation is proud to support our local communities” said Karen Johnson, the foundation’s president. “Supporting institutions such as Georgia Southwestern, which have such a positive impact on the quality of life here, is a great opportunity for us to help make a difference. By embracing giving as part of our business philosophy, we believe we are making Sumter County and the surrounding area a better place to work and live.” Founded in 1906, Georgia Southwestern State University is a four-year unit of the University System of Georgia. Located in the heart of Southwest Georgia, GSW offers a diverse set of educational opportunities with five areas of study, Arts and Sciences, Business, Computing and Mathematics, Education and Nursing. Connected with GSW’s Biology Department, the Water Quality Laboratory is involved in the study of stream and lake ecosystems in Southwest Georgia. The mission of the Weyerhaeuser Company Foundation, established in 1948, is to enhance the quality of life in communities where Weyerhaeuser has a significant presence, and increase understanding of the importance and sustainability of forests and the products they provide that meet people’s needs. Weyerhaeuser Company, one of the world’s largest forest products companies, was incorporated in 1900 and continues a legacy of giving. In addition to awarding grants from its foundation, Weyerhaeuser contributes leadership, time and talent to community-minded agencies through corporate donations, sponsorships and volunteerism. Additional information about Weyerhaeuser’s businesses, products and practices is available at www.weyerhaeuser.com.
