Writing Across the Curriculum

"How do I know what I think until I see what I said?" E.M. Forster

At first glance, Forster's statement may seem unusual, because we tend to think about writing as primarily a tool for transmitting knowledge. However, writing is more than a simple transmission tool; it is a means by which we construct knowledge, a means by which we learn what we know and how we know it. Writing is intimately interrelated with reading and critical thinking skills, and thus, is central to education. Therefore, the promotion of effective student writing and the promotion of writing as an educational tool are central to the GSW learning community, and these aims are the raison d'être for the Writing Across the Curriculum Committee.
