Beginning Freshmen

Applicants are evaluated on their academic performance in their high school CPC courses, SAT or ACT test scores, and the potential for completing the requirements for the desired degree. Georgia Southwestern's freshmen class averages in the range 985 - 1000 SAT in Math and Critical Reading and a 21 Composite on the ACT. The average GPA is 3.00 - 3.15. The University System of Georgia requires a minimum of SAT of 400 Math and 430 Critical Reading and a minimum ACT of 17 Math and 17 English for 4-year universities. Students who have taken the "new" SAT, March 2016 and forward, must meet the equivalent to the above requirements using the USG Concordance Tables. According to those tables, students would need a 24 on the "New SAT Reading Test" and a 440 on the "New Math Section" to be considered for admission to Georgia Southwestern.

  1. Completed application with the $25.00 non-refundable application fee.
  2. Official copy of your high school transcript showing academic achievement in grades 9-11.
  3. Official test score results of either the SAT or ACT.
  4. If admitted, the following requirements will need to be satisfied prior to enrollment:

Transfer

Applicants with 30 or more transferable semester hours completed at their previous colleges or universities will be evaluated on the basis of their academic performance and their potential for completing the requirements for the desired degree. Those with less than 30 semester hours completed are also required to meet freshmen requirements.

  1. Completed application with $25 non-refundable application fee.
  2. Official transcripts from each college or technical school attended. If currently enrolled, send official preliminary transcript now and final transcript upon completion of term. If you completed any college coursework outside of the United States you must submit certified English translations of original transcripts.  In addition, you must also submit your transcripts to an evaluation service and have an original evaluation sent directly to us.  We prefer evaluations from Josef Silny & Associates, Inc.
  3. If you have less than 30 hours of college transfer credit, you must also submit your final high school transcript along with your SAT or ACT scores. You must meet the freshmen admission requirements.
  4. If admitted, the following requirements will need to be satisfied prior to enrollment:

Transient

Transient students are those who expect to return to the college or university where they are presently enrolled. Applicants must present a statement of transient permission from the registrar of the institution they are presently attending.

  1. Completed application with $25 non-refundable application fee.
  2. Transient permission letter from current college.
  3. If admitted, the following requirements will need to be satisfied prior to enrollment:

Non-Traditional

Non-traditional students are those who have been out of high school at least 5 years and have not previously attended college. Applicants must submit their high school transcript showing proof of graduation. If the student obtained a General Education Development (GED) Equivalency Certificate, they must submit a copy of the GED Certificate, GED test scores, and their high school transcript. Evaluation is based on potential for completing the requirements for the desired degree. Due to changes in the Georgia Board of Regents policies, Nontraditional student must also meet the minimum exit score for a minimum of one of the three sections of the Compass Exam. Beginning Summer 2012, students will also have to meet minimum scores in all three areas AND exit one area to be admitted.


Dual Enrollment

The Dual Enrollment Program is available at Georgia Southwestern for outstanding high students wanting to begin college courses while still attending high school. Dual Enrollment is available to Georgia students at public high schools and private high schools, as well as, homeschooled students.

  1. Meet the minimum required SAT/ACT for Dual Enrollment
    • SAT - Using the College Board concordance tables, the new SAT scores will be converted to the old SAT equivalents to determine the combined Critical Reading + Math score. The combined, converted Critical Reading + Math score must equal 970. In addition students taking the new SAT must have a Reading test score of at least 24 and a Math test score of at least 22.
    • ACT - Minimum ACT composite score of 20 with a minimum 17 English and 17 math on ACT.
  2. Minimum cumulative high school grade point average of 3.0 in the Required High School Curriculum courses.
  3. Gain approval from your high school guidance counselor and parent(s).
  4. Homeschooled students will also need to submit a copy of the Declaration of Intent to Homeschool and the Affirmation Statement.
  5. Completion of the Application Procedure for Dual Enrollment.

International

Applicants are evaluated on the basis of their demonstrated academic performance.

Admission requirements for international students are listed below.  Please read them carefully before submitting an application for admission.  Students must be proficient in English before attempting to enter the University.  For students whose TOEFL scores are below the minimum requirement, Georgia Southwestern offers an English as a Second Language program.  For information about the ESL program CLICK HERE or contact the English Language Institute, Georgia Southwestern State University, 800 Georgia Southwestern State University Drive, Americus, GA  31709 or call 229-931-2346.

  1. Submit your completed application with $25.00 non-refundable application fee, a recent photograph and an immunization form (provided by the University).  To expedite the process, you may submit your application online. You must use a credit card to apply online.
  2. Submit official transcripts:
    • Those currently in the US:
      • Those enrolled in a US college, submit official transcripts from each college or technical college attended. If currently enrolled, send preliminary transcript now and final transcript upon completion of term. If you also attended a college outside of the US, follow instructions below for sending college transcripts from schools outside of the US. If you have less than 30 hours of college transfer credit, you must also submit your final high school/secondary school transcript, an evaluation if the high school was outside of the US, along with official test scores. See below for information on sending official test scores. 
      • Those enrolled in a US high school, submit an official copy of your high school transcript showing academic achievement in grades 9-11.
    • Those currently outside of the US:
      • Submit transcripts to an evaluation service and have an original evaluation sent directly to Georgia Southwestern State. University. We only accept evaluations from members of the National Association of Credential Evaluation Services, Inc. (NACES). Josef Silny & Associates, Inc.World Education Services, Inc., and SpanTran: The Evaluation Company are three companies from which we often receive evaluations.
        • Freshman - Students applying as freshman and not transferring college credit must submit an official "document-by-document" evaluation of the secondary school (high school) transcript. Students should complete the high school degree before submitting transcripts for a final evaluation. The evaluation must include the equivalent of 9th through 12th grades in the U.S.
        • Transfer - Students applying as transfers and that have completed college coursework in another country must submit an official course-by-course evaluation of all college transcripts.

  3. Submit official test scores:
    • If you are attending or have gradated from a US high school, submit official SAT or ACT scores. Georgia Southwestern's freshmen class averages a 985 - 1000 SAT in Math and Critical Reading, with a required minimum of 400 Math and 430 Critical Reading. On ACT, an average 21 Composite with a required minimum of 17 Math and 17 English.
    • If you are attending or have gradated from a secondary school or college outside of the US, submit an official Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) score report, IELTS scores, OR official SAT or ACT scores. The minimum TOEFL requirement for admission to Georgia Southwestern State University is 523 on the written test, 193 on the computer test, and 69 on the internet based test. The minimum IELTS score is a 6.5 for regular admission. Students falling below these test score requirements are encouraged to consider applying to Southwestern's English Language Institute. Southwestern's freshmen class averages a 985 - 1000 SAT in Math and Critical Reading, with a required minimum of 400 Math and 430 Critical Reading. On ACT, an average 21 Composite with a required minimum of 17 Math and 17 English.

No application will be considered until all of the above items are received.  Allow at least eight (8) weeks for processing.  Once these items are received, the Admissions Office will evaluate your credentials and make a decision.  If you are accepted to the University, you will be notified by mail or email.

You must submit the following items before the SEVIS I-20 will be issued to obtain your student VISA. These items can not be dated more the 12 months before the beginning of the semester for which you are admitted.

  1. Submit an official Declaration and Certification of Finances provided by GSW. Included, in this document is a Verification of Support and Bank Certification Letter.  For the Bank Certification Letter you may use the included form or an original bank statement that includes the same information. A printed copy of the statement is acceptable it includes an original stamp from the bank.
  2. Students transferring/graduating from another institution within the US must submit an Transfer Clearance From provided by GSW.
  3. Students transferring their I-20 from a college or high school in the US must also submit copies of their current I-20, passport, visa, and I-94.
  4. The original bank documentation must be mailed to Southwestern. The other information can be received by mail or email.

Each international student must obtain and maintain health/accident insurance from the university. Click here to view the rates and additional information about the insurance program or go to our Health Center website. Each international student should also be aware that they are responsible for locating their own housing during vacation periods and breaks between academic terms if they are not living in one of Southwestern's 12-month residence halls.

PLEASE NOTE: All international students enrolling in Georgia Southwestern State University for the first time are required to have a Tuberculosis screening testing & questionnaire – within 10 days of arrival to the GSW campus. Positive PPD tests are required to have a follow-up chest X-ray within 2 weeks.


Distance Learning

Southwestern offers many core curriculum classes online, basic freshman and sophomore courses needed to earn a bachelor's degree. The Southwestern School of Business also offers the upper level classes necessary to complete a BBA online. The university does not offer any undergraduate degrees completely online. If you are not a Georgia Southwestern student, then you must apply for regular admissions consideration as either a freshman, transfer, international, transient, or graduate student.

  1. Minimum total SAT score of 970 or ACT composite score of 20 with a minimum critical reading of 430 and math of 400 or 17 English and 17 math on ACT.
  2. Minimum cumulative high school grade point average of 3.0 in college preparatory courses.
  3. Completed Georgia Southwestern application with $25 non-refundable application fee.
  4. Completion of the MOWR Program Application.
  5. Completion of the University System of Georgia Required High School Curriculum requirements with the following exceptions:
    Students who have not completed the RHSC  requirements may be admitted through the MOWR Program if they are enrolled in the necessary high school courses and scheduled to complete the requirements by the end of their senior year.
  6. MOWR students must satisfy the following conditions:
    Continue to be carried on the official roll of their high school. 
    Minimum university enrollment of three hours per semester. 
    They may enroll for 12 semester hours during the summer term preceding their senior year provided they are not enrolled for high school credit during that term. Tuition for summer semester classes is NOT covered by the HOPE Scholarship.
