Dr. Neal Weaver began his tenure as president of Georgia Southwestern State University (GSW) in July 2017. He came to GSW with nearly 30 years of experience in higher education.

Weaver began his career in higher education at Southeastern Oklahoma State University, where he served as Assistant Director of Public Relations. He then worked at Lucent Technologies in Oklahoma City as Public Relations Specialist for just over a year before accepting a position at Northeastern State University in Tahlequah, Oklahoma.

After 10 years at Northeastern State, culminating in a promotion to Vice President of University Relations, Weaver was offered a position at West Texas A&M University, where he worked for eight years as Vice President for Institutional Advancement.

Weaver then moved Thibodaux, Louisianna, where he served as Vice President for University Advancement and Innovation at Nicholls State University.

After three years at Nicholls State, Weaver was named President of GSW. “I chose to be a part of the storm at GSW because of the way I felt when I visited the campus for the first time – because of the people I met and their excitement for the University,” said Weaver. “There is no better place to be than part of a college campus, and the GSW campus is special even among our peers.”

In the year and a half since they moved to Americus, Dr. Weaver and his wife Kristi have quickly settled into life on campus and in the community. "To Kristi and me, this campus and this University is more than a job and more than a place to work. It is a community and, in many ways, a family," said Weaver.Weaver-Family

Weaver holds a doctorate in organizational leadership from the University of Oklahoma in Norman. He earned an MBA from Southeastern Oklahoma State University in Durant and a bachelor of arts in speech/communications from Oklahoma Panhandle State University in Goodwell.

Dr. Weaver and his wife Kristi have three sons, 25-year-old Austin and 23-year-old twins Brett and Blake.

The Weavers were recently featured in the Fall 2018 issue of Sumter County Living Magazine. Read their story here.
