GSW Writing Center is staffed by undergraduate writing consultants who love writing and reading. The consultants come from majors such as English, History, Political Science, and Accounting and have minors such as Psychology and Marketing. Consultants work with student writers on their writing projects at all stages of the writing process: prewriting, drafting, revising, editing, and proofreading. A consultation can be in-person in the Writing Center or through the Writing Center's web platform. An appointment can be made for a minimum of 30 minutes and a maximum of 45 minutes. In the current pandemic situation, appointments (especially in-person) are restricted to 30 minutes.
Consultants work with writers as interested readers and writing coaches, working alongside writers to improve their drafts. Consultants use strategies such as asking questions, reading the draft aloud, taking notes, outlining and reverse outlining, and brainstorming, among others. You can expect a one-on-one consultation with a trained writing consultant who will converse with you about your paper. You will discuss what you would like to work on and assess the effectiveness of your writing. The consultant will also provide you with strategies that will aid you in the writing process. The consultations are focused on your unique authorship and ideas, and the consultants work to guide you through the progression of your assignment.
You are welcome to use the services of the Writing Center whether or not you have started an assignment yet, completed a draft, or if you are somewhere in between. We can assist you with all elements of writing, from proofreading strategies to research advice. Consultants are trained to work with students who are at any stage of the writing process and who are working on written assignments from any discipline. If you have anything at all to write, we are here to help!
