How do I make an appointment for a writing consultation?

Click here to navigate to the "Appointments" tab. From there, follow the instructions on the page to make a consultation appointment.
White spaces are open for an appointment, while gray squares mean that that time has passed already. Light blue or red squares mean that there is already an appointment at that time, and dark blue means that a consultant is not working at that time. Yellow squares are your own appointment.

How long can consultation appointments be?

We offer two types of appointments: 30 minutes and 45 minutes. While we encourage you to sign up for a full 45-minute session, you can sign up for a shorter, 30-minute session if you're pressed for time.

What happens if I miss an appointment?

You can cancel an appointment once you have made it, but if you do not cancel your appointment and fail to attend, your appointment will be marked as 'missed.' After three missed appointments, you will be locked out of the system. To undo this, you are required contact the director of the Writing Center.

Can I visit the Writing Center without an appointment?

Yes. The Writing Center does accept walk-ins. Upon your visit, you will be required to set up an account and an appointment before the consultation. If you are in a hurry, you can fill out a slip of paper and the consultant will be able to make the account for you after the consultation.

Is there a way to access a writing consultant outside of in-person hours?

Yes. The Writing Center has online hours as well, Monday through Thursday (and Sunday) from 8:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m.

Can I use the Writing Center if I am an honors student/graduate student/dual-enrollment student/etc.?

Yes. The Writing Center can be used by all types of writers at all levels of skill. Even strong writers can benefit from coming to the Writing Center, where their paper can be looked at by a different set of eyes to get a new perspective on the writer's ideas. It also allows writers to hone the voice that they use within the paper, and writers of all skill levels may find that bouncing ideas off of someone else helps with brainstorming, as well.

Can I use the Writing Center for anything other than English papers?

Absolutely! We practice writing across the curriculum, and the consultants are familiar with a variety of different disciplines. We can help with:

  • Artist Statements
  • Business Letters
  • Case Studies
  • Lab Reports
  • Lesson plans
  • Resumes

  • And much more!

Do I have to have a completed draft before coming to the Writing Center?

No. You can come in at any stage of the writing process, from brainstorming to discussing proofreading strategies and grammar skills. Writing consultants will be able to assist you no matter what stage you are in.

Can the Writing Center help me with the research process?

Yes. Writing Center consultants frequently work with the reference librarian to understand how to effectively use both Galileo and GIL-Find as well as other types of sources.

Can I come to the Writing Center for non-academic papers or creative works?

Yes. Anyone who wants feedback is welcome and encouraged to make an appointment with a consultant at the Writing Center.

Is there a way to notify my instructor of my visit to the Writing Center?

Yes. Consultants are able to email a consultation notification to an instructor upon request of the student.

Is there a cost to use the Writing Center?

No. The Writing Center is a free service.

Can I drop off my paper at the Writing Center?

No. Our purpose is not to proofread your paper, but rather to have a conversation with writers about their work. We hope to make better writers, not just better papers; that is, the goal of the Writing Center is not just to work with writers on their paper, but also to work with writers to build on the writing processes that they already use and to teach strategies that will strengthen their skills as writers.
