Placement Testing

During orientation, student take several placement tests so they can be placed in classes in the appropriate levels. The ELI currently uses various types of placement tests. These tests include grammar, reading and listening tests, an oral interview, and a writing assessment. Each student is placed in classes based on the results of these tests.

Class grades are given at midterm and at the end of each semester. The student can access these grades through the GSW RAIN system online.

These grades are usually an average of the following:

  1. Attendance
  2. Exams and other graded material
  3. Participation
  4. Homework
  5. Final Exam

Promotion:  The student should have both (1) a grade of C (70%) or higher and (2) the required exit exam scores.

Section Changes

The director handles section changes at the beginning of a course, usually the first 2-3 days of class.

Section changes can be made for the following reasons only:

  1. If a student feels that he has been placed in the wrong level, he should meet with the ELI director. The director will consult with the student's current instructor(s). The student will be moved only on the recommendation of the student's current instructors.
  2. Students with physical handicaps that make going from class to class difficult or impossible may have a section change or have a special schedule arranged.
