International Students are students who are neither a U.S. citizen nor a U.S. permanent resident and hope to receive a student VISA. Students from around 40 countries currently study at Georgia Southwestern.

 

 

International Student Admission Process and Requirements

  1. Submit your completed application with $25.00 non-refundable application fee.  To expedite the process, you may submit your application online. You must use a credit card to apply online.

  2. Submit official transcripts:
    • Those currently in the US:
      • Those enrolled in a US college, submit official transcripts from each college or technical school attended. If currently enrolled, send preliminary transcript now and final transcript upon completion of term. If you also attended a college outside of the US, follow instructions below for sending college transcripts from schools outside of the US. If you have less than 30 hours of college transfer credit, you must also submit your final high school/secondary school transcript, an evaluation if the high school was outside of the US, along with official test scores. See below for information on sending official test scores.
      • Those enrolled in a US high school, submit an official copy of your high school transcript showing academic achievement in grades 9-11. You must send an additional "final" high school transcript after graduation that shows degree completion.
    • Those currently outside of the US:
      • Submit transcripts to an evaluation service and have an original evaluation sent directly to Georgia Southwestern State University. We only accept evaluations from members of the National Association of Credential Evaluation Services, Inc. (NACES). Josef Silny & Associates, Inc.World Education Services, Inc., and SpanTran: The Evaluation Company are three companies from which we often receive evaluations.
        • Freshman - Students applying as freshmen and not transferring college credit must submit an official "document-by-document" evaluation of the secondary school (high school) transcript. Students should complete the high school degree before submitting transcripts for a final evaluation. The evaluation must include the equivalent of 9th through 12th grades in the U.S.
        • Transfer - Students applying as transfers and that have completed college coursework in another country must submit an official course-by-course evaluation of all college transcripts.

  3. Submit official test scores:
    • If you have completed more than two years from a U.S. high school or are from a native English speaking country, submit official SAT or ACT scores.
    • If you are attending or have graduated from a secondary school or college located in a non-native English speaking country, you may submit TOEFL, IELTS, SAT, or ACT scores.

        ELI Program*

        Advanced Completion Certificate (with required courses/grades)

        • *Students falling below these test score requirements are encouraged to consider applying to Southwestern's English Language Institute. Students who complete the ELI program with an advanced completion certificate (as a result of passing all required courses including Bridge Level courses with grades of C or higher) will be allowed to use the completion certificate in lieu of TOEFL/IELTS scores.
        • Students who meet the minimum TOEFL/IELTS overall score may still be required to complete English as a Second Language (ESL) courses if their section scores are below the scores indicated below. Students must complete these required courses with satisfactory grades before taking English 1101.

No application will be considered until all of the above items are received.  Allow at least four (4) weeks for processing.  Once these items are received, the Admissions Office will evaluate your credentials and make a decision.  If you are accepted to the University, you will be notified by mail or email.

 

Each international student must obtain and maintain health/accident insurance from the university. Click here to view the rates and additional information about the insurance program or go to our Health Center website. 

PLEASE NOTE: All international students enrolling in Georgia Southwestern State University for the first time are required to have a Tuberculosis Screening & questionnaire – within 10 days of arrival to the GSW campus. Positive PPD tests are required to have a follow-up chest X-ray within 2 weeks.

Required Documents

Students must submit the following items before the SEVIS I-20 or DS-2019 will be issued to obtain your student VISA. These items can not be dated more the 12 months before the beginning of the semester for which you are admitted. All documents needed for the I-20 can be received by mail or email.

  1. Submit the Declaration and Certification of Finances provided by GSW. Included in this document is a Verification of Support and Bank Certification Letter. For the Bank Certification Letter, you may use the included form or a bank letter/statement that includes the same information. A printed copy of the statement is acceptable if it includes a stamp from the bank
  2. Copy of Passport Photo Identification page.
  3. Students transferring/graduating from another institution who have F-1 or J-1 status must submit a copy of their current VISA and a completed Transfer Clearance From provided by GSW.

Scholarships

Freshmen international students are encouraged to apply for Southwestern's Beginning Freshmen Scholarships. Georgia Southwestern does not offer scholarships specifically for international students.

Out-of-State Waivers

Southwestern does offer a limited number of International Student out-of-state waivers (~$13,000 savings). Priority is given to students exiting our English Language Institute. International students who take the SAT or ACT are also encouraged to apply for the Outstanding Out-of-State Student tuition waiver.
