Counseling Services

Georgia Southwestern will be offering students access to our new CARE@GSW in partnership with Christie Campus Health. This USG program aims to support the health and safety of our students by enhancing the mental health services offered to students.

Through CARE@GSW students have access to the following valuable resources:

  • Christie Campus Health (new resource) - a 24/7/365 mental health support line for in-the-moment support and linkages to next steps, regardless of time of day or your location. Call anytime, anyplace at 833-855-0079.
    • No cost telehealth and in-person treatment sessions provided by a diverse network of licensed mental health clinicians.
    • Virtual Psychiatric Clinics to offer assessment and medication management. Referral to Psychiatric Clinics comes from Student Counseling Services.
    • Onsite counseling services for scheduled appointments and emergencies with Mrs. Alma Keita, Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. – 5 p.m. Call 229- 931-2708 or email alma.keita@gsw.edu.
  • GSW Talkspace - an online therapy service that connects you to a dedicated therapist from a secure, HIPAA compliant platform. You can send your therapist text, voice or video messages— anytime, anywhere—including from the comfort of your home. Register with your GSW email address at www.talkspace.com/GSW.
  • Protocol - After hours emergency services through Student Counseling Services. Call 229-931-2708. Protocol is a telephonic behavioral health service, for seamless access to crisis assessment, intervention, and stabilization.

If you would like to discuss any of these options with a counselor, please consider scheduling an Initial Consultation. To schedule an appointment, please come by the Counseling Services office located in the Herschel A Smith Health Clinic between 8:00 am and 11:30 am, 12:45 pm and 4:30 pm Monday through Thursday, and between 8:00 am and 11:30 am, and 1:00 pm and 2:30 pm Friday and allow about 15 minutes to complete the initial information forms. If you are a new client or a returning client who has not been seen in the last three months, you will need to complete the initial information forms once again.

Students may schedule a first appointment, called an Initial Consultation, to meet with a counselor to discuss their concerns and to develop an initial plan for addressing them. Follow-up appointments may be scheduled as necessary. During this session a counselor will assess the student’s functioning and reasons for seeking services are evaluated. The goal of the Initial Consultation is to determine the nature and impact of the presenting concerns and discuss options for addressing these concerns. If counseling is appropriate, the intake counselor will recommend the most effective method of treatment, which may include one of our Life Skills Workshops, self-help resources, individual, group, and/or referral.  In some cases, the intake appointment is sufficient in helping students address their concerns. When a student’s presenting issues require on-going longer-term care or specialized treatment that is not provided in the Counseling Center, we utilize our Referral Service to provide a connection to an off-campus community provider coordinated by our Assistant Director.

Please arrive on time for your appointment to avoid rescheduling or a shortened meeting with the counselor. Call the Counseling Center if you need to cancel or reschedule your appointment at 229-931-2708 or by email.
