Information for Current Students

Fall Classes

Fall classes are expected to begin Wednesday, August 12, 2020 with many courses in a hybrid in-class/online format. Please note these plans can change at any moment, and we must all be ready to adapt. This could include a period of remote learning with little advanced notice.

Classrooms and labs will be marked accordingly to accommodate for social distancing and masks are required inside all GSW buildings. Each classroom and lab will be sanitized every night and should be equipped with proper cleaning supplies for faculty and students to clean as desired.

Move-In Day

The Fall 2020 Move-In Plan is guided by CDC's recommendations for social distancing taking into consideration the health and safety of all individuals involved in this process.

  • Every residential student is required to sign up for a designated move-in time using the links below. 
  • Students are not permitted to return to campus without an email confirmation from GSW.
  • Confirmation of designated time slot and arrival time will be sent to the student’s email account provided during the sign-up process the afternoon before their check-in date.
  • Walk-ups without appointments will not be permitted. Adjustments to designated time can be made 24 hours in advance. No adjustments will be made the day of assigned time.
  • Maximum number of 20 students with 2 guests each will be permitted per building per session. The purpose is to minimize health risks and to expedite the check-in process.

Dining Services

Dining Services will open to the campus community beginning August 10. Some may open earlier, pending vendor transition. All dining facilities will be modified to address COVID-19 health and safety standards, including social distancing signage, one-way entry and exit, take-out meal options, and self-swipe payment.

The Dining Hall will have one-way entry and exit with a self-swipe card station at the front. An employee will be on hand to assist those paying with cash or credit card. All foods and beverages will be served to customers by Dining Hall personnel. Seating will be altered to accommodate social distancing and can be expanded into the Faculty and Private Dining Rooms at peak dining times. Take-out options will be available.

Chick-fil-A and Sweet Pepper Deli (formerly Boar’s Head Deli) will be open for take-out only.

Café Campesino (formerly Higher Grounds Café) will be open with limited seating and take-out.

The Canes Convenience Store (formerly P.O.D.) will be open with social distancing.

Campus Services

The Fitness Center will be open to the public with a limited capacity of 20 guests at a time in the facility. Some of the equipment will be relocated to meet social distancing requirements. Masks will be required.

The Deriso Pool is temporarily closed to all faculty, staff, students, and the public for the remainder of the academic year.

Living on Campus

Operations and Policy Updates

  • All residential students will be required to complete a COVID-19 questionnaire and Residence Life contract acknowledging special COVID-19 operations and policy updates prior to gaining access to assigned room. These will be sent to all residential students' GSW email accounts prior to Move-In Day.
  • Guests outside of assigned residence halls will not be permitted.
  • Desk service will be available 24 hours a day to assist with any room needs.
  • Face masks will be required in all common areas and public spaces, but not one's own room.
  • Common areas will be disinfected nightly.
  • Students will not have access to assigned rooms during winter break. Exemption requests may be made for extenuating circumstances. 

Positive Diagnosis for Residential Students

  • In the case a residential student is diagnosed with COVID-19, they should go home. Please see the What to do if you're sick section for further guidance.
  • If a residential student who tests positive for COVID-19 does not have a home to return, arrangements will be made with a local hotel to provide temporary off-campus accommodations.
  • Following standard school illness protocol, students living on the same floor as the diagnosed individual will receive a written notification of the confirmed case with references to local testing sites and self-quarantine practices. 

Self-Quarantine for Residential Students

  • Residential students who have been directly exposed to a confirmed COVID-19 case are highly encouraged to self-quarantine for 14 days.
  • First, they should fill out the COVID-19 Online Report Form and then contact Residence Life staff immediately to discuss a plan.
  • Students may stay in their room as long as it is private or may temporarily move to a designated quarantine room in their Residence Hall.
  • Students may quarantine in place if roommates are also in quarantine.
  • Meals will be prepared by GSW Dining Services and delivered to door of quarantined students three times a day by GSW personnel.

Student Accommodations

  • Students with underlying medical conditions that require them to take special precautions against contracting COVID-19, or cannot wear a mask due to previous health conditions, can apply for accommodations for their classes through the Office of Disability Services.
  • Students must fill out the Accommodation Request Form and will be asked to provide medical documentation from their primary care physician to accompany the completed form.
  • In most cases, students will be switched to a fully-online schedule or to real-time streaming of on campus classes, but accommodations will be granted on a case-by-case basis.

Freshman Orientation

Freshman Orientation will be August 8-11, 2020. New students will check in at the Storm Dome beginning at 9:30am on Saturday, August 8. Face masks will be required and social distancing will be implemented.

Campus Events

All campus events held indoors will be limited to 50 individuals or less (unless in the Storm Dome) when social distancing requirements can not be met.
