What to Do If You're Sick

Important Steps

Students who are experiencing symptoms of COVID-19, have tested positive, or have been directly exposed to someone who tested positive:

  • Do not go to class, or leave class immediately if symptoms begin while in class.
  • Fill out the COVID-19 Online Report at gsw.edu/COVIDreport or email covid@gsw.edu which will notify the Office of the Vice President for Student Engagement and Success (SES).
    • A GSW staff member will be assigned to assist students with managing university affairs such as class absence notification, online coursework while absent, housing relocation and meal delivery if a residential student, and notifying the appropriate GSW staff if an international student or student-athlete.
    • SES will notify Student Health Services who will work with the Sumter County Health Department to get students connected with a registered case manager who will determine the appropriate course of action such as COVID-19 testing, contact tracing, and/or quarantine and isolation instructions.
    • All positive test results for students will be reported to the Sumter County Health Department by SES.
  • Notify your faculty (and supervisor if a student-worker) of your absence.

Employees who are experiencing symptoms of COVID-19, have tested positive, or have been directly exposed to someone who tested positive:

  • Do not report to work, or leave work immediately if symptoms begin while at work.
  • Notify your supervisor and contact Human Resources at 229-931-2000.
    • Human Resources will work with the Sumter County Health Department to get employees connected with a registered case manager who will determine the appropriate course of action such as COVID-19 testing, contact tracing, and/or quarantine and isolation instructions.
    • All positive test results for employees will be reported to the Sumter County Health Department by Human Resources.
  • Review more information on leave and accommodations

Return to Work or School

Do not return to work or class until you have followed the protocol below. The Georgia Department of Public Health's Return to Work and Return to School guidance recommends a time-based return strategy that is determined based on a person’s health status.

Symptomatic persons with confirmed COVID-19 or suspected COVID-19 can return to work or school after:

  • At least 3 days (72 hours) have passed since recovery defined as resolution of fever without the use of fever-reducing medications AND improvement in respiratory symptoms (e.g., cough, shortness of breath); AND,
  • At least 10 days have passed since symptoms first appeared

Asymptomatic persons with confirmed COVID-19 can return to work or school after:

  • At least 10 days have passed since the positive laboratory test and the person remains asymptomatic.
  • Note, asymptomatic persons who test positive and later develop symptoms should follow the guidance for symptomatic persons above.

Asymptomatic persons who have a known exposure to a person with COVID-19 without appropriate PPE can return to work or school after:

  • They have completed all requirements in the DPH guidance for persons exposed to COVID-19.
  • Note, if this person is tested for COVID-19 during the 14 day quarantine period, a negative test result would not change or decrease the time a person is monitored, but a positive test would move the person into one of the above categories, based on whether they are still asymptomatic or have developed symptoms.
