AMERICUS, GA (March 29, 2018) — Georgia Southwestern State University (GSW) has named Suzanne R. Smith, Ph. D., as its new provost and vice president for Academic Affairs (VPAA), effective July 1, 2018, concluding a nationwide search.

AMERICUS, GA (March 15, 2018) — Georgia Southwestern State University (GSW) Public Safety Officer Ethan Johnson was recently recognized as GSW’s Officer of the Year at the second annual Paint the Town Blue Gala held on March 10, 2018.

AMERICUS, GA (March 13, 2018) — For the first time since 2011, the Federal Pell Grant has returned to year-round status and is available for use during summer semester. This change, which went into effect with the 2017-2018 award year, will allow eligible students to receive the full Federal Pell Grant for Summer 2018.

AMERICUS, GA (March 12, 2018) — After two years of preparation, Georgia Southwestern State University’s (GSW) School of Nursing began the transition to become the College of Nursing and Health Sciences on February 1. This restructuring will bring all health and wellness programs under the same college, including nursing, exercise science and wellness, and the most recent long-term care management program.

AMERICUS, GA (March 6, 2018) — Georgia Southwestern State University(GSW) will offer a Bachelor of Science in Long-Term Care Management (LTCM), the first-of-its-kind in the nation, beginning this fall. The new degree program will bring Leisa Easom, Ph.D., to the College of Nursing and Health Sciences as the associate dean. Easom currently serves as executive director of the Rosalynn Carter Institute for Caregiving, a unit of GSW.

AMERICUS (Feb. 16, 2018)— Over 500 high school students, teachers, and sponsors from 42 Georgia high schools traveled to Americus on Feb. 9 to compete in Georgia Southwestern State University’s (GSW) annual Jay Cliett and Bill Kipp High School Mathematics Tournament. Hosted by the School of Computing and Mathematics for its 44th consecutive year, the tournament is the longest-running competition of its kind in the state and is one of the largest each year.

AMERICUS (Feb. 14, 2018)—Amelia Cornell was recently named Georgia Southwestern State University’s (GSW) Outstanding Scholar, the university’s highest academic honor. Cornell, along with other top students, were recognized in a special ceremony by Chancellor Steve Wrigley during the February 2017 meeting of the University System of Georgia’s Board of Regents.

AMERICUS (Feb. 8, 2018)—Robert Carton, Ph.D., associate professor of entrepreneurship at Western Carolina University, is set to deliver the annual Griffin Bell Distinguished Lecture at Georgia Southwestern State University (GSW) on Thursday, Feb. 22. Carton will center his discussion on the effectiveness of a university and community partnership around entrepreneurship and business development.

AMERICUS (Feb. 6, 2018)—The Georgia Southwestern State University (GSW) Center for Business and Economic Development has announced that the 2018 Economic Outlook Luncheon will be held Tuesday, Feb. 13. This is the 22nd in a series of annual economic outlook events sponsored by the Center at GSW and its partner the Americus Rotary Club.
