Avery is the first GSW student to receive this recognition

AMERICUS (March 21, 2019) — Georgia Southwestern State University (GSW) student-athlete Christopher Avery was recognized as the Top Male “Peach of an Athlete” Role Model by the Atlanta Area Council, Boy Scouts of America. Each year, the “Peach of an Athlete” Role Model Award is presented to athletes, both amateur and professional, who exemplify good character and athletic achievement.

40 junior nursing students recognized

AMERICUS, GA (February 28, 2019) – For the first time in Georgia Southwestern State University’s history, the College of Nursing and Health Sciences held a White Coat Ceremony on Tuesday, February 26 to recognize 40 junior nursing students’ transition from the classroom to the clinical setting. The white coat signifies their role and status as a healthcare professional.

AMERICUS, GA (February 7, 2019) – Georgia Southwestern State University (GSW) recently announced an expansion of their Nursing program that will effectively double the number of students entering the program each year to help address the critical shortage of nurses in the state of Georgia.

AMERICUS, GA (January 22, 2019) – Hallie Turner, a rising junior at Georgia Southwestern State University (GSW), was one of six students from across Georgia to receive the 2018 E. Lanier Finch Scholarship from the Georgia Association of Broadcasters (GAB). 

Program honoring GSW alumnus targets region’s best, brightest

AMERICUS (January 31, 2019) — Georgia Southwestern State University (GSW) plans to honor the legacy of GSW alumnus and former U.S. President Jimmy Carter with the new President Jimmy Carter Leadership Program set to launch in Fall 2019. The program consists of two pathways, an Undergraduate Research Track and a Service Track, that exemplify Carter’s lifetime of leadership in education, politics and community service.

ALBANY (January 23, 2019) — Albany Technical College (ATC) officially signs a Pathway Program understanding with Georgia Southwestern State University (GSW) on Wednesday, January 23, 2019 at 9 a.m. in Albany Technical College’s Logistics Education Center, Executive Board Room (second floor). This agreement provides an avenue for AAS degree graduates of Albany Technical College to make a seamless transition to one of southwest Georgia’s premier four-year universities. AAS graduates that choose to take advantage of this agreement will have the opportunity to remain in their communities while completing the requirements for the Bachelor of Science in Long Term Care Management (LTCM) degree in an online or classroom setting.

AMERICUS (January 8, 2019) — Writing tutors from Georgia Southwestern State University’s (GSW) Writing Center had two separate proposals recognized and accepted for the competitive International Writing Centers Association (IWCA) Conference held in Atlanta in Fall 2018. The presentations, given by four GSW students and one GSW alumna, included original, qualitative research on issues unique to university writing centers as well as the larger field of writing studies.

AMERICUS, GA (December 14, 2018) – The Georgia Southwestern State University Class of 2018 took their final steps, and for some their first steps, on campus Wednesday, Dec. 12 at the Fall 2018 Commencement ceremony in the Student Success Center. A noteworthy 426 students earned bachelor’s, master’s and specialist degrees.

AMERICUS (December 7, 2018) — Georgia Southwestern State University (GSW) will hold its Fall 2018 Commencement ceremony Wednesday, December 12 at 3 p.m. in the Convocation Hall of the Student Success Center. Approximately 426 undergraduate and graduate students will be recognized at the ceremony for their academic achievements. The commencement speaker will be Brigadier General Thomas Carden, Jr., Deputy Commanding General of the Multinational Division South East in Bucharest, Romania.

AMERICUS, GA (November 30, 2018) — Georgia Southwestern State University (GSW) recently unveiled a completely renovated accounting classroom in the School of Business Administration. The renovation, which included state-of-the-art classroom technology, new floors and ceilings, paint and a large wall mural, was made possible thanks to a generous donation from Mauldin & Jenkins, an accounting firm based in Atlanta.

AMERICUS, GA (October 25, 2018) — The Georgia Southwestern State Universitycommunity can now find Café Campesino’s locally roasted, fair trade, organic coffee sold by-the-cup inside the dining hall in the Marshall Student Center.

AMERICUS, GA (November 21, 2018) — Georgia Southwestern State University (GSW) is proud to announce the receipt of $15,355 to participate in the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety (GOHS) Georgia Young Adult Program (GYAP). The GOHS addresses young adult driver crashes, injuries and fatalities, and partners with colleges and universities throughout the state to implement this program.

AMERICUS, GA (November 12, 2018) — Georgia Southwestern State University (GSW) has announced a new scholarship program, “Southwestern Promise,” which guarantees scholarships of either $1,000 or $2,000 to beginning freshmen who live in a 56-county region of Southwest Georgia.
