AMERICUS (Feb. 14, 2018)—Amelia Cornell was recently named Georgia Southwestern State University’s (GSW) Outstanding Scholar, the university’s highest academic honor. Cornell, along with other top students, were recognized in a special ceremony by Chancellor Steve Wrigley during the February 2017 meeting of the University System of Georgia’s Board of Regents.

AMERICUS (Feb. 8, 2018)—Robert Carton, Ph.D., associate professor of entrepreneurship at Western Carolina University, is set to deliver the annual Griffin Bell Distinguished Lecture at Georgia Southwestern State University (GSW) on Thursday, Feb. 22. Carton will center his discussion on the effectiveness of a university and community partnership around entrepreneurship and business development.

AMERICUS (Feb. 6, 2018)—The Georgia Southwestern State University (GSW) Center for Business and Economic Development has announced that the 2018 Economic Outlook Luncheon will be held Tuesday, Feb. 13. This is the 22nd in a series of annual economic outlook events sponsored by the Center at GSW and its partner the Americus Rotary Club.

 

AMERICUS (Feb. 2, 2018)—Georgia Southwestern State University (GSW) launched its newest version of www.gsw.edu today.

“Our website is the University’s number one marketing tool,” said GSW President Neal Weaver, Ph.D. “It is critical for prospective students to have a positive impression of Georgia Southwestern, and in the age of technology, that first impression is almost always a visit to our website. I am confident the new look of www.gsw.edu will give a good impression.”

AMERICUS (Feb. 1, 2018)—Georgia Southwestern State University (GSW) Assistant Professor of History Evan Kutzler, Ph.D., has co-authored a book that was recently released by the University of Georgia Press. It is titled “Prison Pens: Gender, Memory, and Imprisonment in the Writings of Mollie Scollay and Wash Nelson, 1863-1866.”

AMERICUS (Feb. 1, 2018)—Georgia Southwestern State University (GSW) hosted the executive board of the Georgia Association of Nursing Students (GANS) for their monthly meeting on Jan. 20, 2018. The board met in GSW’s Rosalynn Carter Health and Human Sciences complex. After their meeting, the group enjoyed lunch served by nursing faculty Rhonda Slocumb and Michele Ragsdale and posed for a photo with the statue of Rosalynn Carter.

AMERICUS, Ga. (Jan. 31, 2018)—Now in its 112th year, Georgia Southwestern State University (GSW) will celebrate “Homecoming” during the week of Feb. 11-17. Activities will begin with a baseball matchup between the GSW Hurricanes and Ohio Dominican University from Columbus, Ohio.

 

AMERICUS (Jan. 31, 2018)—After the first few weeks of classes, early figures indicate Georgia Southwestern State University (GSW) has an enrollment increase for the ninth consecutive semester. At this point, Spring 2018 numbers – 2,861 students - show enrollment has increased by approximately 3 percent over this time last year.

AMERICUS (Jan. 18, 2018)—Georgia Southwestern State University (GSW) the Department of Theater, Communication & Media Arts, and the Rylander Theatre will host the Kennedy Center American College Theater Festival Region IV’s 50th anniversary festival from February 6 - 10, 2018. Over 1,000 students, faculty, guest artists and presenters from colleges and universities in the ten-state region will travel to Americus for the event, along with special guests and dignitaries from across the nation.

AMERICUS (Jan. 11, 2018)—The Georgia Southwestern State University (GSW) School of Education will hold its Scholastic Book Fair beginning Jan. 29 in the GSW Education Center Room 103. The Book Fair will run the week of Jan. 29 to Feb. 2 and will be open from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. each day, with extended hours on Thursday from 8:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.

AMERICUS (Jan. 10, 2018)—Georgia Southwestern State University (GSW) will host its 44th annual Jay Cliett and Bill Kipp High School Mathematics Tournament (formerly the High School Mathematics Tournament) on Friday, Feb. 9. Over 500 students from across the state are expected to travel to Americus for the tournament.

AMERICUS (Jan. 4, 2018)—Georgia Southwestern State University (GSW) is hosting the first Global South Seminar Series of the 2017-2018 academic year. The seminar, "Changing Narratives of Africa and Implications for Health Intervention and Development," is scheduled for Tuesday, Jan. 23 from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m. in the Carter I Nursing Auditorium.

AMERICUS (Dec. 14, 2017)—Earlier this fall, four teams from the Georgia Southwestern State University Mathematics and Computing Undergraduate Research Group presented their ongoing research at the 6th Annual Regional Undergraduate Research Symposium at Albany State University. All four teams had the opportunity to give talks to peers and professors at the Symposium. Two groups earned third place honors for the STEM Oral Presentation category:

AMERICUS, Ga. (Dec. 8, 2017)—One of the larger graduating classes at Georgia Southwestern State University (GSW) took their final steps on campus today at Fall 2017 Commencement in the Student Success Center. Approximately 450 students earned bachelor’s, master’s and specialist degrees.

AMERICUS (Dec. 7, 2017)—According to an April 2017 “New York Times” article by Meredith Kolodner, 41 percent of college students nationwide graduate in four years. What’s more, the longer the process takes, ‘the less likely a student is to make it to graduation,’ Kolodner said.
