Program designed to meet needs of adult learners, military, students going back to school

AMERICUS (March 4, 2015)—Georgia Southwestern State University (GSW) will be adding a new major in August – a Bachelor of Science in criminal justice offered completely online. Known as an “eMajor,” this new degree was approved at the February 2015 Board of Regents meeting in Atlanta as a collaborative program with Dalton State College. The new degree will be granted from Georgia Southwestern’s Department of Psychology and Sociology.

“We are very excited to begin offering this new degree in criminal justice,” said Charles Huffman, Ph.D., professor of psychology and Department chair. “It provides students with ultimate flexibility while still gaining a high quality degree from an exceptional institution. Dr. Courtney McDonald will be the director of the program.”

The Bachelor of Science in criminal justice eMajor is specifically designed to meet the needs of adult learners, military students, working adults and returning students seeking degree completion. This program will prepare individuals for career success in the field of criminal justice by providing students with a foundation of the knowledge, principles, theories and functions common to the American Criminal Justice system.

“Students who complete an undergraduate degree in criminal justice program are well-prepared to work in a variety of fields within the criminal justice system,” said GSW Interim President Charles Patterson, Ph.D. “The program also prepares graduates for advanced studies for those wishing to pursue a law degree or a master’s in criminal justice.”

Georgia Southwestern’s eMajor partner, Dalton State College, was approved to award the Bachelor of Science in criminal justice in February 2009 and has been an eMajor Affiliate institution since 2013. The University System of Georgia eMajor initiative launched in Fall 2012. The eMajor programs exist to provide online undergraduate degrees of the highest quality to Georgia learners.
