AMERICUS (Feb. 1, 2018)—Georgia Southwestern State University (GSW) Assistant Professor of History Evan Kutzler, Ph.D., has co-authored a book that was recently released by the University of Georgia Press. It is titled “Prison Pens: Gender, Memory, and Imprisonment in the Writings of Mollie Scollay and Wash Nelson, 1863-1866.”

The book is currently listed as the #1 new release in Civil War Women’s History on Amazon.

Kutzler’s work presents the letters exchanged between George Washington “Wash” Nelson, a Confederate prisoner of war, and his fiancée, Mary “Mollie” Scollay. The letters follow their courtship through twenty months of imprisonment. The final chapter presents a memoir Wash wrote of his captivity experience. The juxtaposition of the letters and the memoir provides an opportunity for students and scholars to consider the role of memory and gender in retelling Civil War experiences and generating the "lost cause" mythology.

“Prison Pens…” is accompanied by a digital component – a website that allows students and scholars to interact with the volume’s content and sources via an

interactive map, digitized letters, and lesson plans.Willians Kutzler Prison Pens - Cover
