Walk With Us Before You Go-Go: On Tuesday, September 27, GSW held a community-wide walk on campus to promote health and wellness. Everyone got in the spirit of the 80s theme and had a great time. A special shout out to Coach Ben Hicks and Assistant Coach Russell Branch for participating and bringing the men’s basketball team to the walk! Check out the video recap: https://www.youtube.
Sports and Science Camp: This past summer, two disciplines, Exercise Science and Chemistry, worked together and offered an interdisciplinary Summer Camp. The GSW Sports and Science Summer Camp took place in June 27th- 30th, and it was well received by the Americus community. Dr. Catalina Casaru, Assistant Professor & Program Coordinator of Exercise Science and Wellness, led the afternoon swimming program, and Dr. Nedialka Iordanova, Associated Professor of Chemistry, offered hands on experience in the field of chemistry. In addition, former GSW Women’s Basketball player, Shanedra Lockett, joined the camp and worked with participants on enhancing skills for basketball, volleyball and badminton. The main focus of the Camp was to encourage participants to be physically active and introduce them to unlimited possibilities in science, particularly in chemistry.
Self-Defense Seminars: Mark Laughlin, associate professor of music and Titan Karate Academy instructor, conducted three women’s self-defense seminars throughout the month of September. The seminars were free and open to all GSW faculty, staff, and students, and members of the community. Over 30 women attended the 3-week event.
Operation Family Caregiver Invited to Attend ‘Hidden Heroes’ Event: RCI Executive Director Dr. Leisa Easom and Operation Family Caregiver National Director Laura Bauer were recently invited to attend the Elizabeth Dole Foundation’s Hidden Heroes Launch Event in Washington, DC. They were in the presence of actor Tom Hanks, NBC News Special Correspondent Tom Brokaw, Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi, and Secretary of Veterans Affairs Robert McDonald. Hidden Heroes, created by the Elizabeth Dole Foundation, is a groundbreaking campaign to call vital attention to America’s 5.5 million military and veteran caregivers. On the second day of the event, Easom discussed their Operation Family Caregiver program and moderated a lightning round session with other evidence-based programs.
Library’s 50th: On September 13th, the Library celebrated 50 years as a Federal Depository Library.
