Preliminary numbers show Spring 2017 enrollment up nearly nine percent over last spring
AMERICUS, Ga. (Feb. 22, 2017)–-Unofficial numbers show that Spring 2017 enrollment at Georgia Southwestern State has increased by nearly nine percent (over 220 students) from the enrollment this time in Spring 2016 (2,547). Green honored with Kennedy Center’s Gold Medallion
Jeffrey Green, professor and chair of the Department of Theater, Communication & Media Arts at GSW, was recently presented with the Kennedy Center College Theater Festival’s (KCACTF) Gold Medallion award. Read more >>
Green also received a Kennedy Center American College Theater Festival Meritorious Achievement Award for Excellence in Directing for the GSW production ALICE! Of Underland and Mirror Realities.
Anderson receives GADE Outstanding Individual Contribution Award

Seven Exercise Science and Wellness (ESW) students attended the American College of Sports Medicine Southeast Regional Conference from Feb. 16 – 18, in Greenville, South Carolina. The ESW students were led by Drs. Benjamin Meador and Catalina Casaru, assistant professors of Exercise Science and Wellness. Dr. Catalina Casaru presented the tutorial “Optimizing Recovery in the Masters Athlete.”

The Association of Third World Studies which was started by the late Dr. Harold Isaacs in 1983 and produced the Journal of Third World Studies has become the Association of Global South Studies, as of September 2016. The Association produces the Journal of Global South Studies. The journal, which had been produced in house by Dr. Isaacs, has now been accepted by the University of Florida Press as one of their publications. The membership of the AGSS is excited by this dramatic change and is awaiting the first issue to be produced by the UFP this Spring. It will be edited by Dr. Gary Kline, retired professor of political science.
Dr. Nedialka Iordanova, associate professor of Chemistry, became a United States citizen on Jan. 20, 2017 (Inauguration Day). A native of Bulgaria, Dr. Iordanova completed her graduate studies at Pennsylvania State University. Over the last decade, Dr. Iordanova’s impact on Georgia Southwestern State University and the field of Chemistry has been recognized with multiple awards such as: the GSW Featured Scholar Award (2013), Wiley-International Journal of Quantum Chemistry Young Investigator Award (2012) and the Vice-President Award for Excellence in Scholarship (2011), to name a few.
Dr. Iordanova continues to be an avid advocate for GSW’s students, faculty/staff and the Americus community. Congratulations Dr. Iordanova on becoming a U.S. citizen!

Each month the school of nursing gathers for a birthday lunch to celebrate any birthdays during the month. For February, the SON celebrated with a Mardi Gras themed lunch to celebrate Joy Humphey and Joann Davis’ birthdays.
Exercise Science and Wellness Club is hosting a Health Fair for faculty/staff and students on Wednesday, March 8 from 4:00 -6:00 pm. The free event will take place in the Exercise Physiology Laboratory located in the SSC room #1208. Check out the flyer.
GSW Day at the Capitol will be Monday, March 13. GSW faculty, staff and students will meet with the local legislative delegation and share the good things happening on campus to the entire General Assembly.
The final Chamber Concert of the season will be held on Thursday, March 30. The concert will feature pianist Kadisha Onalbayeva. GSW Faculty/Staff tickets are $10.
The next Preview Day will be held on Saturday, April 1.
The Department of Music’s Spring Concert will be Tuesday, April 11.
