ELI students participate in community events
GSW’s English Language Institute (ELI) students were a part of four very special events held during fall semester. On September 8, GSW ELI students, international students and a visiting scholar attended the 41st Annual International Student and Scholar Welcome Reception held at Georgia Tech. Over 400 students, visiting scholars, Kiwanis Club members, supporters and Board members from AMIS, the sponsoring agency, attended the event. One highlight of the event was a performance by the Trey Clegg Chamber Singers.
On Saturday, September 22, a nine-member group went to watch the Atlanta Braves take on the Philadelphia Phillies. This was also an event sponsored by AMIS. It was an exciting game to watch as it was the night that the Braves captured the division championship. Most of the students had never been to a major league baseball game before, so seeing the Braves win such an important game was an added bonus.
On October 23, seven ELI students and visiting scholars visited Furlow Charter School. They were invited to participate in “Mix It Up Day,” which gave Furlow students the opportunity to interact with people from other countries. The ELI students and visiting scholars spent about two hours talking and sharing cultures with the Furlow students in the school cafeteria.
Finally, on November 12, eight current and former ELI students and two visiting scholars participated in an International Education Week event at Sumter Intermediate School. This was a result of an invitation by Jimmy Moore, a current GSW student who has been doing his student teaching experience at the school. The students and scholars gave brief presentations about Mexico, South Korea and China and then spent some time talking to the Sumter students and teachers. Approximately 150 Sumter Intermediate students attended this event.
Panorama event discusses activism in the age of social media
Panorama, GSW discussion series, organized a Windows-to-the-World accredited event titled “Activism in the Age of Social Media” on November 13 in the Nursing Auditorium. The event was attended by over 120 GSW students and a few faculty members. The speakers at the event included Dr. Anish Dave, Associate Professor of English; Mark Hubbard, a political science major; Dr. Evan Kutzler, Assistant Professor of History; and Dr. M. C. Whitlock, Assistant Professor of Sociology. The topics covered during the event were social media and the Arab Spring uprisings, social movements such as #MeToo and Black Lives Matter, history of social and political activism in the US, and sociological issues underpinning social media-led movements, such as the Women’s March.
