GSW students attend Middle Georgia State University History Conference
Nine GSW students accompanied history professor Susan Bragg. Ph.D., to participate in the 2nd Annual Middle Georgia State University Undergraduate History Conference on Dec. 1, 2018. Four of these students presented original research papers covering a broad spectrum of topics. Alison Beckelhymer (History with Secondary Teaching Certification) read her paper suggesting ways that the Eloise series (popular children’s books published in the 1950s) subversively challenged Cold War gender and family values. Amy Conner (Psychology/WGSS/Criminal Justice) discussed the emergence of the ‘Battered Women’s Movement’ from within second wave feminism of the 1960s and 1970s. Ekele Kamalu (History/WGSS) presented a close analysis of children’s literature published during the Vietnam War era. Caitlin McMillan (Sociology) explored the importance of print culture to social movements by discussing ONE Magazine, a pioneering ‘homophile’ newspaper of the Cold War era. Larry Carroll (Computer Science), Chasity Higdon (History), Taylor Potter (Social Science Focus), Jaden Terry (History) and Hope Thomas (Political Science) also participated. Representatives from Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College, Columbus State, Emory University and Georgia College and State University joined the group and their Middle Georgia State hosts, allowing GSW students to talk about ideas, research strategies and academic goals with students and faculty from across the state. Conference participation was generously funded by GSW’s High Impact Practice Opportunity (HIPO) Grant program.
