Wright named GSW Officer of the YearChelsee Wright

GSW Public Safety Officer Chelsee Wright was recently recognized as GSW’s Officer of the Year at the third annual Paint the Town Blue Gala held on March 23, 2019.

A native of Muscogee County, Wright has served the GSW community as a public safety officer for nearly two years. Just before she joined the force, a 2016 tragedy killed two local officers in the line of duty, including one from the GSW Office of Public Safety. The event where Wright was awarded formed two years ago to honor Officers Nick Smarr and Jody Smith and raise money for The Smarr and Smith Foundation.

“Being recognized for this award is the result of all the knowledge and instruction that my supervisors have instilled in me,” said Wright. “I am just happy to be considered valuable amongst great leadership. This award makes me want to work harder, because it’s only the beginning of my time here at Georgia Southwestern.”

School of Education hosts annual Teacher Career Fair

The School of Education hosted their annual Teacher Career Fair on March 5, 2019. The Fair has been a tradition in the School for more than 15 years with school districts from across Georgia invited to participate. Traditionally, the Career Fair is hosted to help the previous fall graduates and current student teachers to secure a job in one of the counties. This year, the invitation was extended to Fall 2019 student teachers. This change was made based on feedback from districts who wanted the chance to meet fall graduates to fill vacancies they may have in January 2020.

This year’s event brought in 34 districts from as far north as DeKalb County and as far south as Lowndes County and Thomas County. The Career Fair is an exciting time for our faculty as we are able to see the excitement our students bring to the experience.

One participate (a current GSW student) wrote on her evaluation form that she “felt like [she] was being mentored all day!” The teachers who presented said they would promote the event more widely next year and encourage their colleagues to attend. Presenters came from Sumter, Coffee, Worth, Schley, Lee and GSW. The School anticipates this event growing each year.
