GSW names 20 incoming freshmen to the new President Jimmy Carter Leadership Program
GSW has named twenty incoming freshmen from across Georgia and Florida to the new President Jimmy Carter Leadership Program, established to honor the legacy of GSW alumnus and former U.S. President Jimmy Carter.
“Because this new leadership program is endorsed by President Carter himself, it was very important to GSW to select only the finest students from those who applied,” said Lynda Lee Purvis, GSW vice president emerita for Academic Affairs and program director. “After a thorough review of the 39 applicants by the Applicant Review Committee, twenty were selected. These students not only achieved outstanding high school grade point averages and admission test scores, they demonstrated exceptional leadership in their high schools and contributed significantly to their communities.”

Southwestern Promise scholarship granted to nearly 200 incoming Georgia freshmen, funds still available
The new Southwestern Promise scholarship has been awarded to 188 (and counting) incoming Georgia freshmen and funds are still available for those hoping to attend GSW this Fall.
The scholarship program, established in Hurricane Michael’s aftermath, automatically guarantees scholarships of either $1,000 or $2,000 to beginning freshmen who live in a 56-county region of Southwest Georgia. Students living outside the 56-county area are also eligible to receive the scholarship and can apply at gsw.edu/scholarship.
GSW hopes this new program will lessen the financial strain of college for many high school students in the region who may have been impacted by the storm.
Nick Cohen, a scholarship recipient from Baconton and an inaugural member of the President Jimmy Carter Leadership Program, said his family was affected by Hurricane Michael with a power outage for two weeks. “When I realized GSW was offering the Promise scholarship, I immediately considered applying and am so glad I did. Even though Michael was a devastating storm, I am thankful this scholarship was created and I know my family is as well.”

GSW announces partnership with Chinese university
GSW recently announced a partnership expansion with Zhoukou Normal University (ZKNU) in Henan Province, China that will create a co-operative Network Engineering major in addition to the Human Resource Management and Marketing programs already established. The new program, managed jointly by the two universities, will bring 100 Chinese computer science students to study at GSW each year.
The program will begin enrolling students in Fall 2019 to study their first three years at ZKNU. In their fourth year, eligible students can enroll at Georgia Southwestern to complete the program in the United States. These students will receive a Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Science from GSW upon their graduation. The first cohort of students are expected on campus in Fall 2022 with a new class following them each subsequent year.
“GSW is proud to expand on our partnership with Zhoukou Normal University which has proven mutually beneficial,” said GSW President Neal Weaver. “We can expect to see an increase in enrollment and revenue over the next few years. This partnership will also provide the unique opportunity for our faculty to teach overseas, and it will broaden the cultural diversity on our campus.”
GSW will send faculty to teach computer science and other courses in China each year. Overall, the courses taught by GSW faculty in China will account for more than one third of the courses in the program major.
