Georgia Southwestern undergraduates showcase student research

Georgia Southwestern recently hosted its 3rd Annual Undergraduate Research Symposium featuring student research on topics such as campaigning and social media, public schools and COVID-19, prison policy, racial stereotyping, history and politics, psychoanalysis, app development, mathematic modeling of love, and healthcare.

Students from a variety of majors and fields shared their research projects with in-person oral presentations on Friday, April 23, while virtual poster presentations were uploaded to YouTube. This was the first Symposium in two years, as the pandemic led to the cancelation of the 2020 event.

“The Symposium recognized students and their faculty mentors for the outstanding research they are doing in their areas of study,” said Suzanne Smith, Ph.D., provost and vice president for Academic Affairs. “Conducting research as an undergraduate is an important opportunity for our students. While simply conducting the research is impressive enough, presenting it before an audience gave the students valuable experience for their future endeavors.”

GSW moving graduate education classes entirely online this summer to give teachers more flexible schedule

Georgia Southwestern State University’s College of Education is moving all graduate classes entirely online this summer after an unprecedented year of stress, online learning, and other challenges related to COVID-19. The flexibility of online summer classes will allow teachers the ability to work with their systems, serve their students’ needs, and restore their own health and well-being.

GSW’s Master of Education (M.Ed.) and Specialist of Education (Ed.S.) programs, which can be completed in just 13 months, are normally offered in hybrid style – online and on campus. The on-campus portion during the summer is generally completed in three weeks during June with two full days on campus each week.

Rachel Abbott, Ph.D., dean of the College of Education, said this decision was not made lightly and genuinely felt it was in the best interest of GSW’s graduate education students.

“I began hearing from students about extended school year calendars, the need or desire to teach summer school, and the overall strain of the past year. I felt it was important to allow a more flexible schedule by not asking them to commute and giving them time to refresh and reenergize over the summer. It’s a good way for us to say ‘thank you’ to our teachers after this challenging year.”

Meador co-authors article

Dr. Benajmin Meador, assistant professor of exercise science, recently published an article alongside four international colleagues. The article, titled "The Associations between Physical Fitness, Complex vs Simple Movement, and Academic Achievement in a Cohort of Fourth Graders," examines a study in which correlation between elementary school students’ body composition, physical activity, physical fitness, movement ability, and academic achievement was analyzed. Movements ranged from simple actions to complex movements requiring executive functioning. In total, 110 fourth graders (60 boys, 50 girls) participated in this experiment.
