China, Summer 2025

A 16-day GSW UNIV 4000 Study Abroad program in China took place during the summer of 2025. Students and faculty participating in the program explored several Chinese cities and historic monuments, experienced Chinese culture and traditions, and even learned local crafts, a dance, and a song. The UNIV 4000 students also toured and learned about the scientific achievements of HIST, creating countless unforgettable moments with Chinese students and faculty.

Bulgaria, Spring 2024

Students enrolled in UNIV 4000 traveled to Bulgaria and Serbia for a study abroad trip. They immersed themselves in the local cultures through visits to Plovdiv, the Bulgarian capital of Sofia, and Veliko Tarnovo, an ancient capital of Bulgaria. The group explored museums and archeological sites, interacted with the local people, and enjoyed a variety of local cuisines. In Bogomilovo, the students did yard work and collected trash on the streets as part of the service component of the class and the trip. Afterwards, they experienced dinner prepared by the locals of Bogomilovo, participated in traditional Bulgarian dances, and listened to the performance of Milen Stoykov, a famous Bulgarian saxophone player. The group also spent one day in Nish, Serbia, where they visited several historic sites and relaxed along the Nishava River.

In January 2020, eight GSW students from different majors accompanied faculty members Dr. Kailash Ghimire, Mr. Keaton Wynn, and Dr. Irina Toteva to Nepal in January of 2020 for a study abroad and service-learning course. The students and faculty spent time in Nepal helped with the rebuilding of a school near Kathmandu destroyed by a devastating earthquake in 2015, visited UNESCO’s World Heritage sites in Kathmandu, including the Birthplace of Buddha in Lumbini, explored the beauty of Chitwan national park, and networked with students at Apex College. They ate local food, met and interacted with people from different backgrounds, and learned more about Nepal, including Buddhist and Hindu cultures.

While spending time in China, I engaged in traditional Chinese cultural practices such as calligraphy, learning the art and history of traditional tea, as well as studying the fundamentals of Tai Chi. From amazing sightseeing and exquisite cuisine to experiencing traditional culture alongside Chinese students, my time in China was truly a remarkable experience, and it is something I will remember dearly.
