The Department of Psychology and Sociology offers a variety of internship options for students in the field. An internship is a form of experiential learning that allows students to earn course credits for work completed in an occupational setting. This experience is designed to help students bridge the gap between academic coursework in psychology and sociology and real-world settings. Internships are designed for juniors and seniors and are available to students with good academic standing.

Internships can help students develop essential occupational skills, including communication, critical and creative thinking, teamwork, and problem-solving skills while under the supervision of a professional in the field. They can help students network and form working relationships with professionals in the field, which can result in letters of reference and career advice. Students often say that an internship is among the most meaningful and important experiences they’ve had as a student, and many of our interns receive job offers at the end of their internship responsibilities.
You must be a junior or senior at the time of the internship and have a GPA of 2.5 or higher in order to be considered.
You are responsible for finding your own internship site; however, there are several internship sites that you may want to begin with, including Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA), Methodist Home for Children and Youth, Southwest Georgia Judicial Circuit, Perry Wellness Center, Lighthouse Children’s Advocacy Center, GSW Counseling Center, and Southwest Georgia Victim Assistance Alliance. You are welcome to intern at a site that is not on this list. For ideas on potential sites, please contact the internship coordinator.
Yes! You can earn up to 9-credit hours of psychology or sociology coursework (Note that only 3-credits can be counted toward a psychology or sociology major/minor; the remaining credits must be applied as free-electives). Interns are required to put in 10 hours/week for each 3-credit hours earned.
First, you need permission to do an internship from your advisor, followed by the permission of the department chair and then the GSW Internship Supervisor. Once you’ve been cleared to do an internship, you’ll need to select your site (see list provided for some ideas). Next, begin preparing your materials. This will include departmental approval paperwork, which is available online, and any other materials required by the site (e.g., background screening, application, etc.). Finally, you will turn in a resume with your materials.
