College of Arts & Sciences Scholarships

The following scholarships are offered through the Arts & Sciences. All awards are based on fund availability and criteria mentioned within each scholarship. The College of Arts & Sciences scholarship application must be completed by the April 2nd Deadline to qualify for these funds. Recommendations for these scholarships are made by the faculty of the College of Arts & Sciences and awarded by the Dean upon the recommendation of the scholarship committee. 
 
 
Biology

Bettie & Claude L. Rhyne, Jr. Scholarship
The family of Bettie and Claude Rhyne, Jr. established this scholarship for upper class or graduate students majoring in Biology who have a 3.0 GPA.

Biology Department Scholarship
This scholarship was established by Dr. Betty Elder to help students majoring in Biology. Students must have a minimum of 25 completed Biology hours with a 3.4 Biology GPA and a total GPA of 3.2.

Charles K. Ewing Scholarship
The Charles K. Ewing Scholarship was established in honor of Charles “Chick” Ewing, a Professor of Biology at GSW for thirty-four years. This award is for students majoring in pre-medicine, biology or nursing at GSW. Criteria are academic excellence, financial need, and professional potential.

Daniel D. Arden, Jr. Science Scholarship
The science faculty established this scholarship to honor Daniel Arden, a former science professor at GSW. The scholarship is awarded to science majors, either Freshmen or transfer students, who have a GPA of 3.0, with consideration given to SAT scores as well as curricula taken while in high school and/or college.

Dr. Kenneth Wurtz Biology Scholarship
This endowed scholarship was established by Dr. Kenneth Wurtz. Dr. Wurtz graduated with a degree in Biology at Georgia Southwestern and created this scholarship to invest in the next generation of biology students. This scholarship is awarded to worthy, undergraduate biology students enrolled at GSW with a preference on returning students, students with a 2.8 GPA or higher, and who demonstrates financial need. Preference will also be given to veterans, active duty military and family and to students who have completed the Introductory Biology sequence.

Hugh D. Carter, Jr. Biology Scholarship
This scholarship was established to honor the memory of Hugh D. Carter, Jr. and is awarded to students who have completed 30 semester hours of biology course work and have a minimum GPA of 3.0.

Michael Gillis Science Scholarship
This scholarship was established by Sandra Gillis in honor of her son, Michael, a GSW geology major. Preference given to students majoring in biology or chemistry. Preference will be given to students with demonstrated financial need without regard to status as incoming freshman, continuing or transfer student. The scholarship is renewable as long as the student remains in good standing, in the biology or chemistry program, and 2.0 GPA is maintained.

 

Chemistry, Geology, Physics

Chemistry Club Scholarship
This scholarship was created by the Chemistry Club President, Michelle Morton. This scholarship will be awarded to students majoring in chemistry with minimum 48 hours completed, have a minimum of 12 hours of chemistry at or above 2000 level, a cumulative 2.7+ GPA with a Chemistry 3.0+ GPA, and be an active Chemistry Club Member.

Daniel D. Arden, Jr. Science Scholarship
The science faculty established this scholarship to honor Daniel Arden, a former science professor at GSW. The scholarship is awarded to science majors, either Freshmen or transfer students, who have a GPA of 3.0, with consideration given to SAT scores as well as curricula taken while in high school and/or college.

L.R. Towson Scholarship
This scholarship was established by alumnus Paul Pitts who credits Dr. L. R. Towson, Professor of Chemistry at GSW 1929-1942, for his successful career. Available to a junior or senior Chemistry major with a minimum 2.5 GPA, after completion of 12 semester hours for juniors and 18 hours for seniors in Chemistry.

Michael Gillis Science Scholarship
This scholarship was established by Sandra Gillis in honor of her son, Michael, a GSW geology major. Preference given to students majoring in biology or chemistry. Preference will be given to students with demonstrated financial need without regard to status as incoming freshman, continuing or transfer student. Vivian Schild Scholarship
This scholarship was established by alumnus Sandra Blaylock Gillis (’69). This scholarship award was created to provide scholarships to female chemistry students at GSW then to a pre-pharmacy major. Should neither be available the scholarship may be made available to a female Science, Technology, Engineering, or Math (STEM) major. Student must have a record of academic excellence as demonstrated by a GPA of 2.7 on a 4-point scale.

Wysochansky Scholarship
This scholarship honors the memory and legacy of Dr. William (Bill) J. Wysochansky, a beloved GSW chemistry professor that had amazing impact on GSW. The Wysochansky Scholarship is awarded to a GSW student who is majoring in Chemistry or Nursing, and who has an academic excellence for a minimum of two years at the University level as demonstrated by a GPA of 3.0.

 

English and Modern Languages

Agnes E. Agerton Scholarship
This endowed scholarship was created by Dr. Millard Agerton, former GSW Science Professor, to honor the memory of his sister Agnes, a Professor of English at GSW from 1966 to 1976. The recipient must be a full-time student majoring in English, Junior or Senior status, with a minimum GPA of 2.5.

Bertschi Scholarship
This restricted scholarship was established by funds received from the estate of Hans Bertschi, a GSW alumnus who died in 2001. The Foundation researched the donor’s history of giving and determined that his intent would be to use the proceeds for scholarships to students in the English and Foreign Language Program. This scholarship will be awarded to undergraduate English students with a minimum of 20 hours in English beyond the English 1102 level, minimum of 3.0 GPA in English courses above English 1102 and a minimum of 2.5 overall GPA. Preference will be given to students with demonstrated participation in college or related academic activities particularly those sponsored by the Chunnel Club and Sirocco. Final selection of recipient determined by the English faculty.

Gladys C. Crabb Scholarship
This scholarship was created by Ms. Blue Argo in memory of Mrs. Gladys C. Crabb. This scholarship is to be awarded to an Americus-Sumter High School senior, with preference given to a student who excels in English or the Humanities, though not limited to only those. It may be awarded on the basis of need.

Iris Argo Scholarship
This endowed scholarship is in memory of Dr. Iris Stewart Argo, an alumnus and Professor of English at GSW for more than thirty years. Dr. Argo was also an accomplished author. Recipients must be English majors with a minimum GPA of 3.0.

Fred Power Scholarship
The family and friends of J. Fred Power, a former Professor of English at GSW, established this endowment to honor his devotion to the students he taught for thirty-seven years. Awarded annually to a non-traditional GSW student who is in good academic standing.

Norton-Hayes English Scholarship
This endowment was established by George David Hayes (1972, B.A., English) to honor Professor Jack Norton, a long time and much-admired faculty member in the Georgia Southwestern State University English Department. Norton’s tutelage and mentorship provided a springboard for Hayes’ educational and professional achievements. Hayes credits GSW and Norton for his lifelong interest in literature and learning.

 

History and Political Science

Georgia Veterans Memorial Scholarship
This scholarship was established in memory of all Georgians who served honorably in the armed forces of the United States.  This scholarship is to be awarded to a student enrolled at GSW, with a major in History, Political Science, or an Arts & Sciences-related teaching program. Preference will be given to non-traditional students or students who demonstrate financial need.

Harold Isaacs Endowed Scholarship
This scholarship is awarded to History or Political Science Majors with a maintained "B" average.

Kimberly Douglas Robins Scholarship
This scholarship was established in memory of Kimberly Douglas Robins, a graduate of Georgia Southwestern and the Chief Administrator of the Andersonville National Cemetery.  The scholarship was created by her parents, Virginia and Buddy Douglas, and by her husband, Dr. Glenn Robins. This scholarship is to be awarded to a student enrolled at GSW, with a major in History, Political Science, or an Arts & Sciences-related teaching program. Preference will be given to non-traditional students or students who demonstrate financial need.

 

Music, Communication and Emerging Media

Dorminy Scholarship
The John Henry Dorminy Foundation provided funds for this music scholarship. The award is offered to music majors with strong academic standards.


Paul A. Rhyne Scholarship
Claude A. Rhyne established this memorial scholarship as a tribute to his son Paul who demonstrated a love for the arts, especially instrumental ensembles. This scholarship is awarded to a student in good standing who is enrolled in a band and/or instrumental performance course at GSW.

Tammy Lee Fortner Scholarship
The family of Tammy Lee Fortner in Columbus, Ga., established this endowed Scholarship in memory of their daughter. Applicants must be majors of either Fine Arts, Psychology or Sociology and maintain a 3.0 GPA in their major. Special consideration is given to students who demonstrate an interest or talent in the use of arts in human services such as art therapy, recreational therapy, occupational therapy, and music therapy.

Wheeler/Parker Scholarship
The Wheeler/Parker Scholarship was established by Jean and Wes Wheeler as an endowment to honor the Parker and Wheeler families. The criteria gives consideration to students who have financial need and meet admission standards. This scholarship will be shared by the College of Business and Computing, the College of Nursing and Health Sciences and the Music Department.

 

Math

Albert Peterson Scholarship
Former Professor of Chemistry at GSW, Dr. Dowe Carter, established an endowed scholarship to honor her brother, Major Albert Peterson. The Peterson Scholarship is available to students who have completed 15 semester hours in science and math at GSW. Criteria for determining recipients include overall GPA and student’s Science and Math GPA.

 

Psychology & Sociology

Dr. Michael Urda Psychology Scholarship
This scholarship was established by Randy and Karen Sanders to provide support for students majoring in psychology who have a GPA of 2.5 or higher, and are in good standing at Georgia Southwestern State University.

 

Visual Arts

Peach State Depression Glass Club Scholarship
This scholarship was established by the membership of the Peach State Depression Glass Club. This scholarship is used to support the Glass Blowing program established at Georgia Southwestern State University. Recipients are awarded this scholarship based on the following criteria – financial need, talent, or academic achievement.

Tammy Lee Fortner Scholarship
The family of Tammy Lee Fortner in Columbus, Ga., established this endowed Scholarship in memory of their daughter. Applicants must be majors of either Fine Arts, Psychology or Sociology and maintain a 3.0 GPA in their major. Non-Scholarship Funding Available

Charles Stephen Cofer Fund for Support of Student Research
This restricted fund was established by Dr. and Mrs. Harland E. Cofer, Jr. and family in honor of their son Charles. The purpose of this fund is to support the research needs of students majoring in sciences and mathematics. A preference will be given to students researching environmental issues. Support could include, but is not limited to, funds for travel for research purposes, travel to professional meetings and research equipment

The Mattie McNeil McKissack Fund for Art, Music, and Literature
This fund was created in 1990 through a bequest from the estate of Mrs. Ruth M. Johnson who taught English and Music at GSW. The funds are to be used to support the Arts at GSW. At the University President’s discretion, these funds may be used to support and recognize student and faculty studies and achievements in Art, Music, and Literature. Submit requests to the University President.
