Why did you choose to attend GSW?
I chose GSW because I wanted to experience college away from home. I loved the atmosphere of campus life and the fact that class sizes were small, which meant that I could connect better with my professors.

Please list your University highlights, achievements, leadership and awards.

  • Zephyr (2019-2020)
  • Dean’s List (1 semester)
  • Academic Achievement List (2 semesters)
  • Student African American Brotherhood (SAAB) (2020-2024)
  • Staff writer for The Sou’Wester (2020-2021)
  • Desk Assistant (2020-2024)
  • National Society for Leadership & Success (2021)
  • Residential Leader (2021-2023)
  • Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., Mu Delta Chapter President (2022-2024)
  • NPHC President (2022-2023)

Why did you choose your major, or what do you love about your major program at GSW?
I chose my major for my passion for writing. With the expansive amount of career options available with an English major (contrary to popular belief), I thought it would be great to simply do what I love!

I love being an English major because our professors encourage us to think creatively. Yes, we focus on grammar and syntax, but also explore different types of writing, like copywriting and technical writing. Our unique perspectives and deep analysis of texts are valued, and subjectivity is always welcomed.

What’s your favorite spot on campus and why?
My favorite spot on campus is the Lakehouse. While it’s not open now, I loved going to events and being able to go and sit by the water during my freshman year in 2019. It’s a really peaceful place to clear your mind.

What have you learned (or are learning) that has made the biggest difference for you?
I’m still learning that everyone is on their own journey. Sometimes, I doubt myself and my abilities to succeed, which also leads to comparison. No one is perfect, and what works for one person may not work for me, so I have to remind myself to be confident in my abilities and they will guide me to my own success.

What has been your greatest challenge?
My greatest challenge has been entering adulthood while in school. No one fully prepares you for the changes that you go through in college, from learning to live on your own, making and losing friends, and even dealing with real issues like mental health. Although I still sometimes struggle to find the balance between the two, it’s been amazing to see how I have matured and overcome a lot of challenges. You definitely learn more about yourself in the process.

What is your plan after graduation?
My plan is to go into the Air Force as an officer.

What advice do you have for incoming students?
Get involved! Although GSW is a small university, your experience is what you make it. Joining organizations and getting involved allows you to learn more about yourself and connect with others.

What is your favorite series to binge watch? Why?
My favorite series to binge watch is Insecure by Issa Rae! I’ve watched that show an unhealthy number of times, but it’s such an amazing show. It really depicts the realities of the highs and lows of being an adult but also being okay with riding that wave and trusting that everything will work out!
