Financial Aid

Financial Assistance for All Students

At Georgia Southwestern, we aim to provide quality support in assisting students with their financial needs. The Office of Student Financial Aid offers financial resources to assist in funding in the form of grants, institutional scholarships, employment, and student loans to students. GSW offers one of the most generous scholarship programs in the state, making us one of the best values and most affordable universities in the nation.

Our staff will help sort through various types of financial aid, including the Georgia HOPE Scholarships and Federal Student Aid Programs. Earning your education doesn't have to come with years of debt, and we're here to help!

2024-2025 FAFSA Release Information

The FAFSA was released on December 31, 2023.  This was a “Soft Launch” meaning that while the application itself will be live, Federal Student Aid (FSA) will not be processing FAFSA forms until early 2024. FSA has announced that it will begin processing FAFSAs in early March and institutions will begin receiving Institutional Student Information Records (ISIRs) in mid-March.

FSA has indicated that once a student completes the online FAFSA, they will get a confirmation page that includes their estimated Student Aid Index (SAI) and Federal Pell Grant eligibility, along with a follow-up email.

Students will be able to make corrections once ISIRs are processed, while institutions will not be able to submit corrections until mid-March. FSA offers a series of videos related to changes for the 2024-2025 FAFSA on the FSA YouTube channel.

Financial Aid Forms

In order to qualify for Financial Aid, students must complete the FAFSA for every academic year. Complete your online application after October 1st and before April 15th to qualify for priority consideration for the 2024-25 term.

How Financial Aid is Awarded

Most student aid is awarded based on financial need. Need is the difference between your budgeted cost of attendance (educational expenses such as tuition, fees, room, board, books, supplies, and other related expenses) and an amount you and your family are expected to contribute toward your education (EFC – expected family contribution – is determined by the central processor based on a national standard formula).

Know More. Borrow Less.

The USG recently launched a financial literacy initiative known as “Know More. Borrow Less.”  This system-wide initiative is a comprehensive plan aimed at reducing barriers to financial aid, improving students’ understanding of borrowing and reducing student debt.  As part of this initiative, the GSW Office of Student Financial Aid will provide GSW loan borrowers with automated, customized debt notifications in order to help students make better borrowing decisions.  Content includes the amount a student currently owes, the expected monthly payment and interest cost, projections of future costs should they borrow more and the estimated remaining loan eligibility.  These notifications will be delivered by email and are typically sent during April. The email will originate from noreply@gsw.edu with the subject “Personal Student Loan Debt”.

To learn more about the “Know More. Borrow Less.” Initiative, you may visit the USG’s KMBL website.

GSW's Financial Aid office offers Financial Aid TV, which gives you the opportunity to get answers to financial aid questions, 24/7, while offering a variety of informative videos.
