Since 1906, Georgia Southwestern has provided an elevated educational experience for individuals all across Georgia, from each corner of the US, and from countries around the world. Our tight-knit community is proud to celebrate the dedication Hurricane graduates have embraced in order to become the best versions of themselves.

Two fall ceremonies will allow Fall 2022 graduates and guests to celebrate in person at the Storm Dome on Friday, December 9th. A web live-stream will be available for those unable to attend in person, and the recording will be located on YouTube.

12:00pm (noon) Ceremony - College of Arts and Sciences, College of Business and Computing, and College of Nursing and Health Sciences
4:00pm Ceremony - College of Education

Appropriate Attire

Graduates must wear a cap and gown and business attire. Regalia should be ordered through Herff Jones. All graduates should wear the tassel on the right side until your degree is awarded.

Only stoles and cords from recognized GSW student organizations and honor societies may be worn. (See list of approved organizations and societies.) Contact your organization's adviser for information on receiving your cord or stole.

  • Women should wear dresses, skirts, or dark pants and dark shoes.
  • Men are to wear dress shirts, ties, dark slacks, dark socks, and dark shoes.
  • Please do not wear anything high on the neck underneath and gown.

Arrival & Departure

Graduates should arrive half an hour prior to their ceremony and begin lining up outside the Storm Dome in Centennial Plaza (outside the ground floor by the fountain). In the event of rain, graduate line-up will be relocated to the Intramural Gym.

Guests may begin arriving one hour prior to the ceremony and enter at the main Storm Dome entrance. Doors to the inside of the Convocation Hall will close 5 minutes before the ceremony and no entry will be allowed at that point. Graduation will also be live streamed in SSC Room 2410 for latecomers and guests with restless children.

Graduates may join their family and friends outside for multiple photo opportunities.

Viewing Options

We encourage those that are unable/unwilling to attend the in-person ceremony to view the ceremony online.

The ceremony will be broadcast live on the Georgia Southwestern YouTube page.

There are no guest restrictions for the Fall 2022 ceremonies, but please be courteous of the amount of family and friends that you bring as the seating will fill up quickly inside the Convocation Hall. It's important that close family and friends are able to watch their graduate walk across the stage.

For those not able to attend in person, each ceremony will be live-streamed on GSW’s YouTube channel.

While we welcome well-deserved applause, loud cheers and noisemakers are not appropriate. These disruptions often drown out the names of other graduates walking across the stage and prolong the ceremony. Every GSW graduate deserves to hear his or her name read as that prized degree is awarded. Please know that loud cheers and noisemakers are not allowed and anyone disrupting the ceremony may be asked to leave.

Please do not bring balloons inside the Storm Dome as this slows the flow of traffic entering the building. We encourage you to leave balloons in your vehicle or outside with additional guests until after the ceremony when you can meet up with graduates outside.

We encourage guests to view the Visit Americus website for more information on lodging, restaurants, and other activities Americus has to offer during your stay.

Honors Recognition

In order to be eligible to graduate with honors from Georgia Southwestern State University, a student must earn a total of at least 45 semester hours of academic credit at GSW with an institutional GPA of at least 3.5. The grade point average for honors will be determined by adding the quality points and credit hours from all work completed at all accredited colleges and universities to the graduating quality points and credit hours earned at GSW.

The cumulative grade point average must fall into one of the following categories to be considered graduating with honors:

Honors Distinction Minimum GPA Requirement
Cum Laude 3.50
Magna Cum Laude 3.70
Summa Cum Laude 3.90

Only candidates for baccalaureate degrees are considered for academic honors at graduation.
